Wait, WHAT? LMB’s Conspiradores de Queretaro No-Hit Tigres de Quintana Roo – AND LOSE 1-0

You can’t win a game if you don’t score any runs.

The Conspiradores de Queretaro proved that statement true on Tuesday night, losing to the Tigres de Quintana Roo 1-0 despite five Queretaro pitchers combining to throw a no-hitter. It was the second time in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol history that a team allowed no hits to the opposition in a game and lost, with the five pitchers for the Conspiradores joining Freddy Arroyo, who accomplished a no-hitter for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in 1988 in a 2-1 loss to Campeche.

Tyler Alexander started the game for Queretaro and went five innings, allowing one run on no hits, two walks, and striking out three.

It was in the bottom of the third inning that Queretaro blemished the gem. After Alexander issued a lead-off walk to Antonio Munroy, Munroy stole second and then advanced to third when Miles Simington reached base on an error by Queretaro center fielder Aneury Tavarez. When Gage Howard grounded out to Queretaro first baseman Henry Urrutia, Munroy scampered home with the game’s only run.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s counterpart for Quintana Roo, Major League Baseball veteran Carl Edwards Jr., was tossing a no-hitter of his own. In the top of the fifth, Howard preserved Edwards’ no-hitter, ranging back to the right field warning track to make a twisting catch on a fly ball by Queretaro catcher Carlos Soto.

Alexander left after the fifth, yielding to Adrian Guzman, who got into trouble after allowing Howard to reach base and advance to second on an error, again by center fielder Aneury Tavarez. Howard took third when Willie Calhoun grounded out to first, and a walk to JJ Matijevic gave Quintana Roo runners at the corners with two outs. Michel Baez came out of the bullpen and intentionally walked Leonardo Reginatto to load the bases, then got Matt McDermott to line out to end the threat.

Ofreidy Gomez threw a perfect seventh for the Conspiradores, striking out one, and Reymin Guduan handled the eighth, retiring Quintana Roo in order.

That brought Queretaro up for their last chance in the top of the ninth, with Edwards still working on a no-hitter of his own. After a pop out to short by pinch hitter Alejandro Flores and a Rusney Castillo foul pop to catcher Robert Emery, Aneury Tavarez made up for his two errors in the field, singling to center to break up Edwards’ no-hitter and give Queretaro some life.

That brought Clayton Andrews on to relieve Edwards and face Eric Filia, who singled and moved Tavarez to third with the tying run. But Andrews got Yurisbel Gracial to hit into a fielder’s choice at short, where Matt McDermott flipped the ball to Munroy for the final out.

For Quintana Roo, Edwards went 8 2/3 innings, allowing none runs on one hit and two walks, striking out eight to win a no-hitter by the opposition.

The game was the seventh time in LMB history a team had allowed a run during a no-hitter.
