Wake Forest Remains Atop D1Baseball.com Rankings After First Weekend of Season

The first D1baseball.com NCAA Division I Baseball rankings were released on February 18 following the first weekend of games in the 2024 season.  

Wake Forest remains atop the rankings after defeating Fordham 9-3, Illinois 5-2, and Akron 14-3 to open the season.

The University of Florida played one game this weekend against St. John’s University and lost 9-5 on February 16. The other two games in Gainesville, Fla. against St. John’s University were rained out on February 17 and 18, resulting in the University of Florida going down two spots from No. 2 to No. 4. 

Louisiana State University, at 3-0, rose from No. 4 to No. 3 after beating the Virginia Military Institute 11-8 on Friday, Central Arkansas University on Saturday 2-0, and the Virginia Military Institute 27-5 in seven innings, with all three games played at home. 

The University of Arkansas, 2-1, moved up one spot from No. 3 to No. 2 and won two-of-three games against James Madison University in Fayetteville, Ark. 

The University of Indiana started out the 2024 season unranked, but at 2-1 are now ranked at No. 23 after beating George Mason University on Sunday 9-3 and Coastal Carolina University on Saturday 7-2. The Hoosiers lost to Duke University on Feb. 16 by the score of 6-3. 

Northeastern University, 1-2, is not ranked this week after being No. 23 to start the 2024 season. The Huskies won one game and lost two against the University of Arizona in a three-game series in Tucson, Ariz. 

Coastal Carolina University, 1-2, dropped seven spots from No. 18 to No. 25, and got a win against George Mason University 26-0 on February 16. 

The University of California at Santa Barbara, 1-2, dropped five positions in the rankings from No. 17 to No. 22 after losing two out of three games to Campbell University on the road at Buies Creek, N.C. 

The University of Alabama, 3-0, moved up two spots from No. 19 to No. 17 and swept Manhattan College in their three-game series in Tuscaloosa, Ala. 

The UCLA Bruins, 3-0, rose two spots from No. 22 to No. 20 after sweeping Gonzaga University in their three-game home series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. 

Texas Tech, 2-1, moved up from No. 21 to No. 19 after beating the University of Oregon on Sunday 11-7, beating the University of Nebraska 6-3 on Saturday, and losing to the University of Tennessee on Friday 6-2, with all their games last weekend at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. 

The University of Iowa, 2-1, rose from No. 20 to No. 18 ,beating Seton Hall University on Friday 5-2, beating Ball State University on Saturday 5-0 and losing to Lehigh University 8-4 in their first three games of the season in Charleston, S.C. 

The University of North Carolina, Wake Forest University, Texas Christian University, Louisiana State University, UCLA, Clemson University, East Carolina University, Texas A&M University, Oregon State University, the University of Alabama, the University of Virginia, and the University of South Carolina are all at 3-0 to open up the 2024 season in the Top 25 D1baseball.com rankings. 

Notebook: East Carolina University sophomore right-handed hitter Parker Byrd became the first player in NCAA Division I Baseball history to appear in a game with a prosthetic leg in his college debut on Friday against Rider University. Byrd lost his right leg on July 23, 2022 in a boating accident in a creek near the Pamlico River in North Carolina. According to ECU, the propeller damaged both legs, which ultimately required the partial amputation of his right leg. … Sacramento State University outfielder Matt Masiangelo drew eight hit by pitches in his first-nine plate appearances of the 2024 season in the program’s first-three games against Loyola Marymount University this past weekend.
