Walk-off Single Wins Little League Classic: MLB Sunday Recap

The Tigers hit a walk-off to win the Little League Classic and take the series against the Yankees. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB. 

Tigers 3, Yankees 2 

  • Detroit staged a one-run comeback to win the Little League Classic and beat the Yankees in the series. Rookie Jace Jung hit a game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth before Zach McKinstry answered the Yankees run in the 10th by tying the game again with a single. McKinstry stole second, and Parker Meadows drove him in with the game-winning single. Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal, allowed one run on three hits in six innings. The Yankees fell back into a tie atop the AL East.

Marlins 3, Mets 2

  • Derek Hill drove in the winning run with a single in the eighth inning to help the Marlins avoid the three-game sweep. The Mets trail the Braves by two games for the final NL wild-card spot after taking two of three against Miami.

Orioles 4, Red Sox 2

  • Baltimore won the final game of the series to earn a split and moved back into a tie for first in the AL East. Adley Rutschman began the scoring with a home run in the fifth, and Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer in the next inning to extend the Orioles lead. Albert Suarez struck out six in six shutout innings to pick up the win.

Nationals 6, Phillies 4

  • The Nationals snapped their four-game skid thanks to homers from Ruiz, Call, and Wood to win the final game in Philadelphia. Jacob Young hit a sac fly in the eighth inning that gave Washington the lead before rookie James Wood hit a solo homer in the ninth to give the Nats a cushion. The Phillies own the best record in the league at 73-51.

Mariners 10, Pirates 3

  • George Kirby pitched six innings and allowed two runs with five strikeouts to help the Mariners end their five-game losing streak. Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer in the first to give Seattle the early lead and propel them to the win. The Mariners are four games behind the Astros for the AL West lead.

Royals 8, Reds 1

  • Kansas City swept the Reds and won their fourth straight to pull within three games of the AL Central lead. Dairon Blanco hit his third homer in two days for the Royals offense. A pair of two-run innings gave the Royals the lead before a four-run ninth put away the game.

Rays 8, Diamondbacks 7

  • Dylan Carlson hit an RBI single in the 12th inning to win it for the Rays, who completed their three-game sweep despite blowing a six-run lead. Adrian Del Castillo tied the game for Arizona in the ninth with a three-run homer before Tampa won the game in the 12th. The Diamondbacks are three games back of the NL West-leading Dodgers.

Astros 2, White Sox 0

  • Framber Valdez struck out nine and allowed three hits in seven shutout innings to pick up his eighth straight win. Yankees Diaz broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a solo home run. Jose Altuve provided an insurance run in the eighth with a solo shot of his own. Houston has won 10 of 11 and has a four-game lead in the AL West.

Brewers 2, Guardians 0

  • The Brewers matched their season high with five straight wins and a sweep of the AL Central-leading Guardians. Colin Rea allowed two hits and struck out five in seven innings to end the series. Willy Adames drove in what proved to be the winning run in the first inning on a single to center field. Cleveland’s lead in the Central remained at two games.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1  

  • Shohei Ohtani hit his NL-leading 39th home run, and Miguel Rojas drove in a run on a single in the fifth to lead the Dodgers to the win. Clayton Kershaw allowed four hits in six innings to grab his second win of the season. Los Angeles has a three-game lead in the NL West. The Cardinals have dropped six of seven and sit five games out of wild card position.

Blue Jays 1, Cubs 0

  • The Blue Jays avoided the sweep after Joey Loperfido homered off Cubs ace Shota Imanaga in the second inning to put the team on top. Bowden Francis dished seven strikeouts and held the Cubs to three hits in seven innings of work.

Rangers 6, Twins 5

  • Adolis Garcia and Josh Jung homered to cap off a five-run seventh inning that gave the Rangers the lead after trailing 4-0. Carlos Santana hit a home run of his own in the ninth to tie the game and send it to extras. Jung reached on a single in the tenth that scored Garcia after a throwing error from Jose Miranda to give Texas the win. The Twins remained two games behind the Guardians in the AL Central.

Rockies 3, Padres 2 

  • The Rockies took the final game of the series against the Padres and won the season series 8-5. Sam Hilliard drove in what proved to be the winning run on a ground out to second in the sixth inning. The Padres sit atop the NL wild-card race and trail the Dodgers by three games in the NL West.

Braves 3, Angels 1

  • Ramon Laureano homered for the second straight day to help the Braves take the series. The Braves have a two-game lead over the Mets for the final NL wild-card spot.

Giants 4, A’s 2

  • Jerar Encarnacion and Michael Conforto hit back-to-back homers in the 10th to put the Giants on top. Blake Snell struck out ten and allowed one run in seven innings. The Giants are four games out of a wild-card spot in the NL.
