WBN’s International Player of the Week is Vaqueros de Monteria outfielder Andres Angulo in Liga Profesional de Béisbol in Colombia.
Angulo, 27, leads the LPB with nine stolen bases and is third in OPS at 1.053 in 64 at-bats. He also had two home runs, 11 RBI, and a slash line of .359/.578/.475.
Angulo had a strong game against Toros de Sincelejo in a 7-9 loss on December 4 at Sincelejo in Estadio Beisbol 20 de Enero. Angulo went 3-for-5 with a double, stolen bases, and run scored.
Angulo has had a long road to the LPB after signing with the San Francisco Giants as an international free agent out of Colombia in 2014. He was signed as a catcher and clearly has the speed for that position.
He spent six seasons in the Giants’ farm system, making it as high as their Double-A affiliate, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, in 2021. The Baltimore Orioles signed him to a minor league deal before the 2022 season, and he reached their Double-A affiliate, the Bowie Baysox. He was released at the end of 2022 by the Orioles.
His MiLB career numbers are 13 home runs, 105 RBI, 19 stolen bases, and a slash line of .236/.308/.337 in 855 at-bats.
He also played in the Caribbean Series for Colombia in 2022 and 2023 with Caimanes de Barranquilla and Vaqueros de Monteria. He got fourth place in the 2023 Caribbean Series with Vaqueros de Monteria. They lost 1-0 in the third-place game at Estadio Monumental del Caracas Simón Bolivar in Venezuela to Cañeros de Los Mochis, which represented Mexico in Ligá Mexicana del Pacifico. Angulo hit one home run and drove in six runs in the 2023 Caribbean Series.
This is his second winter with Vaqueros de Monteria. His career international numbers are ten home runs, 72 RBI, 23 stolen bases, and a slash line of .288/.395/.435 in 430 at-bats.
