West Virginia Mountaineers Have Challenging Start to Big 12 Play in 2025 Season

On Oct. 31, the West Virginia Mountaineers released their full 2025 schedule for the upcoming college baseball season.

Last season was a good one for head coach Randy Mazey’s team; they finished 36-24 overall and were 19-12 in conference play. They made the NCAA Tournament and won the Tuscon Regional. However, their season came to an end in Chapel Hill, N.C., as the North Carolina Tar Heels beat them in the super regional with a trip to the College World Series on the line.

The Mountaineers will look to repeat that success and even make it further this season. Winning in Big 12 play will be key to that, and this season, they have two challenging opponents to begin conference play.

After ending non-conference play against Towson on Mar. 11, West Virginia hits the road to Stillwater, Okla., to play the Oklahoma State Cowboys at O’Brate Stadium to kick off their Big 12 slate in 2025. These games will be from Mar. 14-16.

The Cowboys were a great team a season ago. They hosted a regional in the NCAA Tournament, won the Big 12 tournament in Arlington, Texas, and finished second in the conference, only behind the Oklahoma Sooners.

Not to mention, after the weekend series against Oklahoma State, West Virginia returns home for back-to-back midweek games against James Madison from Mar. 18-19. The Dukes were an NCAA Tournament team a season ago, playing in the Raleigh Regional, and they went deep in the Sun Belt tournament.

Following this tough stretch of midweek games, they host the Arizona Wildcats in Morgantown at Kendrick Family Ballpark. Much like Oklahoma State, Arizona also hosted a regional game in Tuscon, where the Mountaineers played. The two teams did not play each other during that round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats were also the regular season champions and conference tournament champions of the Pac-12 last season providing another difficult opponent for West Virginia. In 2025, the two teams will play from Mar. 21-23.

This slate of Oklahoma State, James Madison, and Arizona games will be crucial in dictating whether the Mountaineers are a true contender in the Big 12 again. If they play well through this, Mazey’s squad may find themselves having another great record in conference play.
