Chicago Cubs utilityman Willi Castro is making a compelling case to represent Puerto Rico in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic. In a recent interview with Luis Murphy of MB Sports TV, Castro confirmed his desire to don the Puerto Rico uniform and compete on the international stage.
“I think it’s going to be a privilege for me to be there to represent the island,” Castro said when asked about the opportunity to play for Puerto Rico.
Through 93 games in the 2025 MLB season, Castro is slashing .239/.323/.394 with 10 home runs. While his bat has provided occasional pop, it’s his defensive versatility that makes him an invaluable asset. He was dealt to the Cuba at the deadline by Minnesota in part because of that versatility. Castro has appeared at every position except first base and catcher, showcasing the type of flexibility that could be a key advantage in the WBC.
Castro has been in contact with the Puerto Rican WBC delegation. A strong finish in September—and potentially a playoff run with the Cubs—could solidify his spot on the 2026 roster.
Castro, who was born in Puerto Rico, is also eligible to play for the Dominican Republic due to his parents. However, given the Dominican Republic’s stacked infield depth, making that roster would be a long shot. Puerto Rico offers not only a better opportunity for Castro to earn meaningful playing time but also a chance to make a real impact.
Currently, Castro is considered one of the leading candidates to start at second base, competing with names like Javier Báez, among others.
The 2026 tournament carries even greater significance for Puerto Rico as they will host Pool A play at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan. This marks the first time Puerto Rico will host a WBC round since 2013.
Puerto Rico will play on March 6 vs. Colombia, March 7 vs. Panama, March 9 vs. Cuba, and March 11 vs. Canada.
Puerto Rico is one of only four nations to have advanced beyond the first round in every edition of the World Baseball Classic. With a strong roster shaping up, and the energy of the home crowd behind them, the 2026 tournament could be another memorable chapter in their WBC history.
