Wilyer Abreu Launches Bombs in Venezuela, Winning the 23rd Pepsi Jonrón Festival in Valencia

With plenty happening across Venezuela this week, baseball delivered its own fireworks as Abreu outslugged Andrés Chaparro for the Jonrón Festival crown in Valencia.

Boston Red Sox right fielder and Venezuelan native Wilyer Abreu won the 23rd Pepsi Jonron Festival at Estadio José Bernardo Pérez in Valencia, Venezuela on Monday night, defeating Andrés Chaparro in the finals with nine home runs.

Chaparro finished with eight home runs in the finals.

Estadio José Bernardo Pérez is home to the Navegantes del Magallanes of the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP).

Every participant received two minutes per round at the Pepsi Jonron Festival.

Ronald Acuña Jr., Jadher Areinamo, Maikel Garcia, Jackson Chourio, Yasiel Puig, Salvador Perez, and Venezuelan prospect Francisco Renteria all took part in the event.

Acuña Jr. and Puig led the first round with 21 home runs each, followed by Abreu with 20 and Chaparro with 19, advancing all four to the semifinals.

Abreu and Chaparro both hit 15 home runs in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Abreu powered through his semifinal matchup on Monday night.

The semifinal matchups were Abreu vs. Puig and Chaparro vs. Acuña Jr.

Venezuelan urban artist Akapellah closed out the event with an on-field performance Monday night. The 23rd Pepsi Jonron Festival was streamed live here on December 1.

The 2025–26 LVBP season resumes on December 2. All LVBP games for the 2025–26 season stream on BeisbolPlay via paid subscription through the league’s best-of-seven championship series in January, leading up to the 2026 Caribbean Series.
