Saturday’s Winter Ball Playoff Results

Aguilas Cibaenas (10-7) at Leones del Escogido (12-5) – After heavy rain hit Santo Domingo Saturday afternoon, the start of the game between the Aguilas and Leones was moved back to 4:30 p.m. EST, but heavy rains hit again, forcing the game to be postponed until Sunday at 3 p.m. EST. Notably, this was the first rainout in Santo Domingo since Jan. 20, 2018, when the Leones were scheduled to visit the Tigres del Licey. The last time the Aguilas and Leones were delayed by rain in the Dominican capital was Dec. 26, 2018.
A win on Sunday would put the Aguilas in the finals, as they hold the tiebreaker over the Toros del Este, while a loss would force a deciding game between the Toros and the Aguilas on Monday.
Toros del Este (10-8) 6, Gigantes del Cibao (2-16) 5 – Batting in the No. 9 spot, Sergio Alcantara went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, giving the Toros a 3-1 lead with a two-run double in the top of the second and driving in the game-winner with another double in the top of the eighth. Eric Filia contributed a two-run double in the fourth for the Toros, and Yaramil Hiraldo, J.C. Mejia, and Joe Corbett combined to hold the Gigantes scoreless over the final three innings, with Hiraldo earning the win, Mejia earning a hold, and Corbett earning his seventh save of the year.

The Toros now have to sweat out Sunday’s game between the Aguilas and Leones. A win by the Leones at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal would send the Toros to the finals, while an Aguilas win would leave the two teams tied at the end of the round robin.

Caribes de Anzoategui (6-4) 8, Aguilas del Zulia (5-5) 1 – Balbino Fuenmayor hit his fourth homer of the playoffs, a solo shot in the fifth, and the next batter, Herlis Rodriguez, added a solo homer for the Caribes, who improved to 5-4. Romer Cuadrado hit a solo homer for Anzoategui in the eighth, and Hernan Perez hit a bases-loaded double that scored three in the romp. Andres Chapparo hit a solo homer to score Zulia’s lone run.
Navegantes del Magallanes (4-6) 10, Cardenales de Lara (6-3) 9 (10 Innings) – Jose Gomez drew a bases-loaded walk to push Jose Cordoba across with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th as the Navegantes pinned a third round robin loss on the Cardenales. Luis Sardinas, Renato Nunez, and Leandro Cedeno each hit solo homers for the Navegantes. Ildemaro Vargas hit a solo homer for Lara in the fourth.
