The four first-round playoff series in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico got underway on New Year’s Day, and the playoffs in all four leagues of the Confederacion de Beisbol Profesional del Caribe will either begin or continue this evening.
Algodoneros de Guasave 18, Jaguares de Nayarit 4 – The Algodoneros shocked top-seeded Nayarit in Game 1, scoring 16 runs over the first five innings. Leo Heras went 1-for-4 with three walks and drove in four runs, three coming on a three-run homer in the fourth, and Orlando Pina went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, hitting an RBI single in the first, an RBI double in the second, and a two-run homer in the ninth. David Hensley hit a solo homer for Nayarit.
Aguilas de Mexicali 3, Yaquis de Obregon 2 (10 Innings) – Alex Mejia’s two-out double in the top of the 10th inning scored Estevan Florial from first with the game-winning run as the seventh-seeded Aguilas topped Obregon in the series opener. Yadir Drake hit a solo homer for the Aguilas, and Marco Jaime tied the game in the seventh for Mexicali with an RBI single that scored Norberto Obeso. Aguilas’ starter David Reyes threw six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk, striking out two. Santiago Chavez had an RBI single in the fifth for Obregon.

Charros de Jalisco 6, Naranjeros de Hermosillo 5 – Mateo Gil’s eighth-inning single scored Jose Aguilar with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth as the Charros stopped Hermosillo on the road in the series opener. Charros starter Luis Ivan Rodriguez went six full innings and allowed two runs, one on an RBI single by Willie Calhoun in the first and another by Cesar Salazar in the fourth, striking out four and walking two. Michael Wielansky drove in three runs for Jalisco, one with a sac fly in the top of the third and two with a single in the sixth.

Tomateros de Culiacan 7, Caneros de Los Mochis 3 – Tomateros starter Manny Barreda went six innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking one and striking out one as Culiacan was the only higher seed to win Game 1 of the first round. Joey Meneses went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, driving in Edgar Robles with a sixth-inning single and himself and Robles with a two-run homer in the eighth.
