Winter Ball Playoffs: Leones del Escogido Improve to 4-0; Caribes Advance to LVBP Round Robin

Four team, 18-game Round Robin Playoff

Leones del Escogido (4-0) 3, Gigantes del Cibao (0-4) 2 – Changing the manager didn’t change the result for the Gigantes del Cibao on Tuesday, as they fell to 0-4, losing to the Leones del Escogido, who got a two-run homer from Junior Lake in the bottom of the seventh that put them ahead for good. Jose Marmolejos drove in a run for the Leones with a ground out in the fourth, and starter Radhames Liz threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and walking two while recording three strikeouts.

Toros del Este (3-1) 8, Aguilas Cibaenas (1-3) 5 – Luis Liberato singled home Ismael Alcantara in the eighth to tie the game, and then Bryan De La Cruz launched a three-run homer that gave the Toros their third win in four games of the LIDOM round robin. Six pitchers from the Toros bullpen combined to allow five hits and a run over the final five innings of the game, with Oklahoma native Joe Corbett striking out one in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

LVBP
Two-game Wild Card Series

Caribes de Anzoategui 13, Tigres de Aragua 12 (12 Innings) – The Caribes tried to give this one away, but alas, a bottom of the 12th-inning solo homer by Herlis Rodriguez gave the Caribes a lead they couldn’t cough up, sending them to the LVBP’s 16-game round robin playoff.

Jesus Sucre launched a grand slam in the bottom of the third that put Anzoategui out to a 7-0 lead, but a pair of walks with the bases loaded and a grand slam by Aragua’s Jose Martinez in the top of the fifth cut the lead to 7-6.

A solo homer in the bottom of the fifth by Balbino Fuenmayor made it 8-6, and in the sixth, Fuenmayor’s two-run single made it 10-6. A triple by Diego Infante and an RBI single by Sucre gave the Caribes a 12-6 lead.

That lead lasted all of the break between the bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh. Gorkys Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and then with runners on first and third and still no outs, Leobaldo Pina hit an RBI single to make it a 12-9 game. Jose Peraza’s two-out RBI single cut into the lead, and then Alberth Martinez hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 12-apiece.

So it stayed until the bottom of the 12th, when Rodriguez put the Caribes into the round robin with his extra-innings homer.
