Winter Ball Playoffs: Leones del Escogido Notch 10th Win; Culiacan and Jalisco Win Series Openers

Leones del Escogido (10-3) 7, Toros del Este (7-6) 2 – Six runs in the sixth, two of them coming on passed balls by Toros catcher Tres Barrera, got the Leones their 10th win in the round robin. Michael De La Cruz had a two-run single in the sixth, Alcides Escobar drove in one with a single, and Jorge Mateo had a bases-loaded walk. The win, combined with the loss by the Gigantes del Cibao, assured the Leones of at least a third-place finish in the round robin.

Aguilas Cibaenas (7-6) 9, Gigantes del Cibao (2-11) 3 – A two-run double by Ezequiel Duran keyed a four-run first inning for the Aguilas, who cruised past Cibao to climb above .500. In the seventh, Cristhian Adames hit a solo homer as Steward Berroa drove in a pair of runs with a triple. Odrisamer Despaigne, who joined the Aguilas as a reinforcement after playing the regular season with the Yaquis de Obregon in Mexico, threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits for the Aguilas.

Navegantes del Magallanes (1-4) 8, Aguilas del Zulia (3-2) 4 – An RBI single in the top of the seventh by Carlos Rodriguez tied the game for the Navegantes, and the next inning, a two-run double by Luis Sardinas put the Navegantes on course to their first win of the round robin. A two-run single by Jose Gomez later in the eighth gave the Navegantes insurance. Andres Chapparo and Jose Pirela each homered for Zulia in the loss.

Caribes de Anzoategui (3-2) 5, Cardenales de Lara (4-1) (11 Innings) – Luisangel Acuna tied the game for Lara, grounding into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to score Yonny Hernandez, but the Caribes got an RBI double in the bottom of the 11th from Jesus Sucre to score Leonel Velera with the winning run. Aldrem Corredor had two RBIs for Lara, clubbing and RBI double in the third and an RBI single in the seventh.

Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico

Charros de Jalisco 5, Aguilas de Mexicali 3 – Tirso Ornelas went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, hitting a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth that scored alejandro Osuna and Cade Gotta as the Charros took a 1-0 series lead. Starter Manny Banuelos, who joined Jalisco as a reinforcement for this series, allowed one run on six hits over six innings, walking one and striking out seven.

Tomateros de Culiacan 6, Algodoneros de Guasave 0 – Starter Manny Barreda and reliever Sasagi Sanchez combined to no-hit the Algodoneros for seven innings, and the Tomateros’ bullpen maintained the shutout as Culiacan took Game 1 of the series. Barreda allowed four walks over 5 2/3 innings and struck out six, while Sanchez walked one in 1 1/3 innings of work. Fernando Villegas drove in a pair of runs for Culiacan with RBI singles in the first and fifth innings.
