Winter Ball Playoffs: Luisangel Acuna’s Four Homers Power Lara; Leones del Escogido Extend Lead In LIDOM

Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional

Cardenales de Lara (4-0) 21, Bravos de Margarita (1-2) 9 – Luisangel Acuna went 6-for-6 with six runs scored, four homers and seven RBIs, hitting a three-run shot in the second, solo homers in the sixth and seventh, and then a two-run homer in the ninth to become the first player in LVBP history to homer four times in a single game. The fourth homer came off Bravos catcher Francisco Arcia, who came on after Alfred Gutierrez was ejected by second base umpire Roberto Moreno.

The Cardenales scored 15 runs over the first four innings and routed the Bravos, led by their former manager Henry Blanco, to take their fourth win of the LVBP’s 16-game round robin. Ildemaro Vargas scored four times and drove in three runs for Lara and Danry Vasquez drove in five runs and added a three-run shot in the sixth.

The Bravos did hit the Cardenales’ veteran starter Cesar Valdez early, torching him for seven runs on seven hits and a walk in two innings, but it was only enough offense to cover Acuna’s production, and there were eight other Cardenales in the lineup.

Aguilas del Zulia (3-1) 15, Navegantes del Magallanes (0-4) 7 – The Aguilas scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first, and Simon Muzziotti went 5-for-5, scored twice, and drove in four runs, hitting a pair of RBI singles and a solo homer as the Aguilas handed the Navegantes their fourth loss in the round robin. Brainer Bonaci punctuated the 10-run first with a solo homer — the only one of the inning — and Luis Castro hit a three-run shot for Zulia in the fifth.

Gigantes del Cibao (2-10) 2, Toros del Este (7-5) 1 – Jose Siri’s RBI single to left in the bottom of the 10th scored Melvin Mercedes, giving the Gigantes their second win of the round robin and keeping the flame of their dim playoff hopes alive for another day. Seven Cibao pitchers combined to hold the Toros to four hits and three walks, allowing the lone run for the Toros in the top of the fourth when Manuel Pena’s sac fly scored Bryan De La Cruz. Johan Rojas drove in Carlos Franco in the home fourth with an infield single.

Leones del Escogido (9-3) 8, Aguilas Cibaenas (6-6) 3 – Alcides Escobar went 3-for-5 with runs scored and Junior Lake went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBIs as the Leones grabbed their ninth win of the round robin. Escogido broke out to a 4-0 lead early, getting RBI singles in the first from Socrates Brito and Michael De La Cruz. Escogido now leads the round robin by two games over the Toros del Este and can’t finish lower than third.
