Winter Ball Playoffs: Seventh-Seeded Aguilas de Mexicali Sweep Obregon, Los Mochis Takes 3-1 Lead on Culiacan

Aguilas de Mexicali 4, Yaquis de Obregon 1 – Wynton Bernard got the seventh-seeded Aguilas on the board with an RBI double in the second, Alexis Wilson drove him home later in the inning, and Alex Mejia hit a two-run homer in the third to power Mexicali’s offense, giving them a four-game sweep of the No. 2-seeded Yaquis de Obregon. Starter Mark Simon allowed one run on four hits over five innings, walking three and striking out one, and Jake Sanchez earned his second save of the playoffs for Mexicali. Allen Cordoba’s RBI single in the fourth scored Roberto Valenzuela with the Yaquis’ lone run.

Jaguares de Nayarit 6, Algodoneros de Guasave 2 – David Hensley’s double in the top of the first got River Town home for a 1-0 Nayarit lead, and they added another in the opening frame when Ricardo Valenzuela singled home Hensley for a 2-0 lead. Valenzuela, who finished the game 2-for-3, singled home Carlos Sepulveda in the third, and Jose Orozco hit a solo homer in the fourth as the No. 1-seeded Jaguares avoided being swept by the Algodoneros. Aristedes Aquino added a two-run double for insurance in the eighth. Victor Labrada hit an RBI triple in the sixth, and Jorge Flores followed with a double that scored Labrada for Guasave’s second run.

Caneros de Los Mochis 8, Tomateros de Culiacan 4 – Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Caneros got a three-run homer from Rodolfo Amador and Yasmany Tomas followed Amador with a solo homer to get Los Mochis a 4-1 lead. Amador, who went 2-for-2, drove in another run with a sac fly in the fourth and two more with a two-run homer in the sixth, finishing the night with six RBIs. Orlando Martinez drove in two runs for Culican, one with a single in the first and another with a sac fly in the ninth.

Charros de Jalisco 12, Naranjeros de Hermosillo 3 – Michael Wielansky hit solo homers in the first and second innings, Julian Ornelas hit one in the third, and then the Charros piled eight runs onto their 4-2 lead in the fifth, getting RBI singles from Alejandro Osuna and Bligh Madris, an RBI double from Japhet Amador, and a three-run homer from Ornelas. Starter Luis Payan threw six innings for Jalisco, allowing three runs, only one of them earned, on four hits and a walk, striking out five as Jalisco evened the series at two games apiece.

Toros del Este (6-2) 3, Leones del Escogido (6-2) 1 – In a possible championship series preview, the Toros handed the Leones their second loss of the round robin behind RBI singles from Eloy Jimenez and Jeimer Candelario in the third. It was the third straight win for the Toros, who got four scoreless innings of relief work via the combined efforts of seven different pitchers, with lanky Oklahoman Joe Corbett earning his third save of the round robin playoff.

Aguilas Cibaenas at Gigantes del Cibao – Weather in San Francisco de Macoris resulted in this game being postponed to Wednesday.

Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional

Both games schedule for Monday night in the LVBP were postponed on Sunday due to the ongoing political instability in Venezuela. The league expects the five-team, 16-game round robin playoff to resume on Wednesday night.
