Winter Ball Playoffs: Venados de Mazatlan Stave Off Elimination; Tigres del Licey Lead In LIDOM Round Robin

No. 8 Venados de Mazatlan 3, No. 1 Tomateros de Culiacan 2 – Mazatlan grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on Phillip Ervin’s two-run single and scored the winner in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fabricio Macias, staying alive to play game five with the win. Starter Raul Carrillo threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing a run on five hits and a walk and striking out three. Dwight Smith Jr.’s RBI single in the eighth got cut the lead to one and put the tying run on third with two outs, but the Tomateros couldn’t get another across.

Charros de Jalisco 3, Aguilas de Mexicali 1 – Julian Ornelas had an RBI single in the first and a sac fly in the eighth to drive in two of Jalisco’s three runs as the Charros took a 3-1 series lead Sunday. Six Jalisco relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk over 4 2/3 scoreless innings to maintain the lead. Mexicali’s lone run came on a single by Matt McDermott in the fifth.

Algodoneros de Guasave 4, Caneros de Los Mochis 1 – Drew Avans hit a two-run double in the second that put Guasave up 3-0 and went 3-for-3 and reached base five times, also drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch, as the Algodoneros evened the series at two games a piece.

No. 2 Naranjeros de Hermosillo 4, No. 7 Yaquis de Obregon 2 (10 Innings) – Sergio Burruel drove in the ghost runner, Jasson Atondo, in the top of the 10th with a double, and Luis Gonzalez drove in an insurance run with a double of his own as the Naranjeros evened the series. Dylan McIlraith allowed one hit and struck out two to earn a three-out save in the bottom of the 10th.

LIDOM

Tigres del Licey 7, Aguilas Cibaenas 0 – Miguel Andujar’s one-out single in the first drove in Emilio Bonifacio, and Jorge Alfaro doubled home Andujar as the Tigres took the lead early and kept adding to it, shutting out the Aguilas and improving to 3-1 in the round robin. Troy Johnson hit a solo homer in the fifth and Alfaro hit one of his own in the seventh. The Aguilas fell to 1-3 with the loss.

Leones del Escogido 8, Estrellas Orientales 3 – A five-run fourth inning helped the Leones snuff out the Estrellas, giving both teams a 2-2 record. The Leones got an RBI triple from Hector Rodriguez, RBI doubles from Socrates Brito and Junior Caminero, and a single from Pedro Severino in the big frame. Longtime MLB starter Johnny Cueto threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk, striking out one to earn the win.

Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional

Bravos de Margarita 3, Aguilas del Zulia 1 – Anthony Jimenez drove in a run by grounding into a fielder’s choice in the second and another with a single in the sixth as the Bravos improved to 4-3. Starter Angel Rondon threw five innings, allowing one run on one hit and a walk, striking out three for Margarita. The loss dropped the Aguilas back to .500 at 3-3 in the round robin.

Navegantes de Magallanes 10, Tigres de Aragua 0 – The Navegantes pumped six runs across in the eighth to extinguish any remaining hopes of an Aragua comeback, getting RBI singles from Jose Gomez, Carlos D. Rodriguez, Yangervis Solarte, and Eliezer Alfonso in the inning. Cristofer Ogando threw six shutout innings for Margarita, allowing two hits, three walks, and striking out six, and the Margarita bullpen allowed one hit over three scoreless innings. The Bravos improved to 2-5, while the Tigres fell to 1-5.
