Yadiel Hernandez Hits for Cycle

Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos outfielder Yadiel Hernandez hit for the cycle in Tuesday’s 11-3 win over the Rieleros de Aguascalientes. The 36-year-old went 4-for-5 with five RBI.

Hernandez launched a home run in the second inning, hit a triple in the fifth, a double in the seventh, and completed the cycle with a single in the eighth.

Hernandez, born in Matanzas, Cuba, played three years of Major League Baseball with the Washington Nationals from 2020-22, hitting .267 with 19 home runs in 218 games. He played for the Sultanes de Monterrey during the 2023 LMB season, and 2024 is his first year with the Tecolotes de Los Dos Laredos.

Player to Watch: OF Jerar Encarnacion

Encarnacion, an outfielder for the Guerreros de Oaxaca, has had a scolding start to the 2024 LMB season.

The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native leads all LMB hitters with 11 home runs, 23 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Designated hitter and outfielder Leonys Martin of the Conspiradores de Queretaro is second in LMB with six home runs.

Encarnacion previously played in MLB for the Miami Marlins in 2022, posting a .548 OPS with three home runs in 23 games.

Diablos Rojos del México Activate INF Diosbel Arias

On Tuesday, Irving Furlong of Septima Entrada reported that the Diablos Rojos del Mexico had added infielder Diosbel Arias to the active roster.

Arias, born in La Habana, Cuba, split the 2023 minor league baseball season between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock in the Texas Rangers organization. Most recently, he hit .229 with one home run in 12 games for the Toros del Este during the 2023-24 Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana season.

On March 25, in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu, Arias hit a grand slam into the Yankees’ bullpen to put the Diablos Rojos del México ahead 5-4. His bases-clearing moonshot proved vital, as his team went on to win the game 8-5.

This Day in Mexican Baseball History

On April 24, 2010, Jorge Cantu of the Florida Marlins was held hitless in an 8-1 loss against the Colorado Rockies, breaking his 21-game hitting streak.

The former MLB infielder played eight seasons from 2004 to 2011, mainly with the Tampa Bay Rays and Marlins. In Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, Cantu played for the Tigres de Quintana Roo (2013, 2015-16), Toros de Tijuana (2016-18) and the Diablos Rojos del México (2019, 2021-22).

Cantu was born in McAllen, Texas, but was raised in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
