Yankees Call Up Cam Schlittler; Sign Jeimer Candelario to Minor League Deal

Schlittler Promoted to MLB – The New York Yankees called starter Cam Schlittler up to the Major Leagues a day after the club announced Clarke Schmidt would likely have to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Schlitter, a 6-foot-6 righty out of Northeastern University, has risen rapidly through the Yankees’ minor league system after being taken in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He started the 2025 season with Double-A Somerset, making nine starts in 10 appearances, throwing 53 innings with 67 strikeouts against just 17 walks. With Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Schlittler threw 23 2/3 innings over five starts, striking out 35 and walking nine with a 3.80 ERA.

The move reflects how the Yankees have had to reach deep into the organization for starting pitching in 2025. They lost Gerrit Cole for the season to Tommy John surgery and 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil to a lat strain, though Gil is expected to begin rehabbing in the minor leagues this week.

Schlittler is the 10th-ranked prospect in the organization according to MLB Pipeline and joins a starting rotation that as of right now includes Carlos Rodon, Max Fried, Marcus Stroman, and Will Warren.

Candelario Signs Minor League Deal – Dominican corner infielder Jeimer Candelario has signed a minor league deal with the Yankees after being released by the Cincinnati Reds on June 29.

He batted just .113/.198/.213 over 80 at-bats with Cincinnati, hitting two homers and driving in nine runs while playing to a .0.9 WAR, the second season in a row Candelario produced below replacement level. He hit .229/.279/.429 with 20 homers and 56 RBIs in 427 at-bats with the Reds last year, but also struck out 114 times and produced -0.7 WAR.

Candelario adds a potential power bat to the organization and gives them another corner infield option should they choose to try and shift Jazz Chisholm Jr., a middle infielder by trade who’s been playing third base often this season, to see more action second base.

The Yankees conclude a three-game series against their cross-town rival, the New York Mets, Sunday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. EDT.
