2024 Baseball European Federation Cup – Day 4 Recap

The 2024 Baseball European Federation Cup is being played from June 3-8 at the Zürich Heerenschürli Baseball Stadium in Zurich, Switzerland. 

All of the 2024 Baseball European Federation Cup games will be at the Zürich Heerenschürli Baseball Stadium.

The Round Robin of the BEFC will be from June 3-7. The BEFC championship game will be on June 8 at 6 a.m. EST. 

The Zurich Barracudas from the Switzerland Baseball and Softball Federation, the Hoboken Pioneers from the Belgium Division I operated by the Koninklijke Belgische Base en Softball Federatie, the London Mets from the Britain Baseball Federation National League, the Mariners from the Irish Baseball League operated from Baseball Ireland and the Rättviks BSK from Elitserien and operated by the Swedish Baseball and Softball Federation are all participating at the 2024 Baseball European Federation Cup.

(3-0) Hoboken Pioneers (BEL) 16, (3-1) Rattviks BSK (SWE) 3  F/7 

The Hoboken Pioneers beat the Rattviks BSK 16-3 in seven innings via the mercy rule on Thursday to remain undefeated at the 2024 BEFC in Group Switzerland. 

Hoboken Pioneers starting pitcher Lucas Rizzi threw seven innings and allowed nine hits, three earned runs, one walk, and struck out six. Rizzi chucked 114 pitches, with 74 strikes on Thursday. 

Rattviks BSK starting pitcher Pontus Ununger threw two innings, allowing eight hits, seven earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout. 

Rattviks BSK relief pitchers Ollie Jerfsten and Jan-Mikael Johson threw five innings and allowed 13 hits, eight earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts in their Thursday loss. 

Hoboken Pioneers right fielder Xander Verspreet launched a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to capture the four run inning with center fielder Luis Unda and corner infielder Dennis De Quint coming into score to extend the lead to 4-0.  

Verspreet ended the day with eight RBI, five hits, and two runs scored in his five at-bats on Thursday. 

Hoboken Pioneers designated hitter Lucas Rizzi smacked a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the third inning and had three hits, one RBI, and one run scored in his five at-bats. 

Pioneers second baseman Wesley Janssens during his five at-bats had three hits and two RBI. 

Unda had two hits, two RBI, one walk, and scored three runs in his four at-bats. 

Pioneers utility player Benjamin Goffaux had three hits and scored four runs in his four at-bats. 

De Quint finished the day with two hits, one walk, one strikeout and scored three runs during his four at-bats. 

(1-2) Mariners (IRL) 6, (1-2) Zurich Barracudas (SUI) 7

The Zurich Barracudas beat the Mariners 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning on Thursday with a game-winning hit from right fielder Simon Bradl, who drove an RBI single to right field, scoring shortstop Fabio Nico Bundi. 

The Zurich Barracudas pitching staff with starting pitcher Kevin Patrick Vonderschmitt, relief pitchers Tim Bruderli, Tiago Lutz, and Alexander Addison Bruce threw nine innings, allowing 11 hits, six earned runs, eight walks, and seven strikeouts. Bruce played at third base defensively before he entered the game to pitch on Thursday night. 

The Mariners pitching staff with starting pitcher Jamie Cuevas, relief pitchers Leo Farrell and Daniel John Woodburne threw 8.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, seven earned runs, four walks, and four strikeouts. 

Woodburne played defensively at first base before he went into pitch on Thursday.  

The Barracudas got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with first baseman Nils Bruderli smacking an RBI single to center field, scoring Bruce for the first run of the game. 

In the top of the third inning, the Mariners finally got on the board with Woodburne lifting a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring right fielder Fionn Gallahar-Hall to tie the game up at 1-1. 

The next batter, outfielder James Ian Kelly smacked an RBI single to right field, scoring third baseman Daniel Joseph Sweatland to take the lead at 2-1. 

During the bottom of the fifth inning, the Barracudas took the lead with center fielder Kyle Graves rocking a two-run double to left-center field, scoring second baseman Marc Manuel Bernhard Schnider and designated hitter Nicholas Robin Fischer to go up 3-2. 

In the the top of the sixth inning, the Mariners tacked on three runs starting with catcher Patrick Marley Kelley hitting an RBI single up the middle to score Woodburne to tie the game up at 3-3. 

The next batter, Patrick Mitchell swatted an RBi single through the right side of the infield, scoring shortstop Gareth Edward Donnelly to take the lead at 4-3. 

The Mariners extended the lead to two in the top of the sixth inning when Bruderli balked in the fifth run of the game during second baseman Trajan Finarelli’s at-bat, as Kelly came into score to make it 5-3. 

During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Barracudas tied the game up at five starting with Bruderli hitting an RBI groundout to second base, scoring Bundi to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. 

A few batters later, Fischer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring catcher Jakub Stefan to tie the game at 5-5. 

In the top of the eighth inning, the Mariners took the lead with Sweatland drawing a bases loaded walk, scoring Finarelli to take a 6-5 lead. 

During the bottom of the ninth inning, Bruce led off with a walk to start the rally. 

A few moments later, Bruderli lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bruce to tie the game up at 6-6. 

Brandl came up in the bottom of the ninth a few batters later and drove a two-out game winning single to right field to score Bundi and helped the Barracudas beat the Mariners 7-6 on the fourth day of the 2024 BEFC.
