2024 Baseball European Federation Cup Qualifier – Day 2 Recap

On Monday, the Baseball European Federation Cup Qualifier 2024 began in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Five teams will compete to earn a spot in the Baseball European Federation Cup in 2025.

The five teams competing in Group Slovenia from Monday, June 10, to Saturday, June 15, are the Akademics Sofia, Eagles Cluj, Kranjski Lisjaki, Valerenga Baseball, and the Angels Trnava. The event is a round-robin tournament until Friday, and the two teams with the best records will advance to the final on Saturday.

Day 2 Results

On Tuesday, day two of the tournament, the Akademics Sofia took on the Angels Trnava, and the Eagles Cluj went up against Valerenga Baseball.

The Akademics Sofia (1-1) collected their first tournament win over the Angels Trnava (1-1) 7-2 on Tuesday after losing 19-0 in six innings against the Kranjski Lisjaki on Monday.

Valeriy Kovalenko struck out eight in six innings for the Akademics Sofia, and catcher Keyberth Mejias went 2-for-4 with the game’s only home run, a solo shot, in the top of the first inning.

The Angels Trvana struck out in 17 of their 34 plate appearances, usually a recipe for a guaranteed loss. Starting pitcher Samuel Deak allowed three earned runs in six innings for the Angels Trnava and took the loss.

On Tuesday, the Valerenga Baseball (1-0) won their first game of the tournament 11-3 against the Eagles Cluj (0-2).

Despite striking out 11 times, Valerenga Baseball scored seven runs and four others on account of four errors from the Eagles Cluj defense.

Yanni Ofranidis threw all nine innings for the Valerenga Baseball, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and struck out 10. Center fielder Alberto Danzie and third baseman Joe Rollwagen collected three hits and two RBI each to guide the Valerenga Baseball lineup.

Sean Bailey Hale lasted 5.2 innings on the mound for the Eagles Cluj and allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits. The Eagles Cluj struck out 10 times compared to just three walks.

On Wednesday, Valerenga Baseball will face the Angels Trnava at 5 a.m. EDT, and the Eagles Cluj will play the Kranjski Lisjaki at 11 a.m. EDT.

All games of the Baseball European Federation Qualifier 2024 in Slovenia will occur at BSK Jezica Tesovnikova in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
