The Kansas Jayhawks (45-16, 22-8 Big 12) are in a super regional for the first time since 1993. They will host the Oklahoma Sooners (36-22, 14-16 SEC) this weekend at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence. Oklahoma is looking for a return to the College World Series for the first time since 2022.
Here is World Baseball Network’s preview of the 2026 Lawrence super regional.
Kansas and the home run ball, a dangerous combination
The Kansas Jayhawks swept their way to a regional championship with a win over the Northeastern Huskies and two wins over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Offensively, Kansas was powered by some big-time home run hitting. In the three games they played during the Lawrence regional, the Jayhawks had eight home runs as a team.
This is a continuation of some great power hitting they had during their Big 12 Tournament title game in Surprise, Ariz. In a 9-0 win over West Virginia, the Jayhawks had four home runs.
This season, Kansas is 11th in the country in home runs with 110 as a team. The long ball will be a major factor for the Jayhawks during the Lawrence super regional.
Oklahoma’s offense leads the charge in taking down Georgia Tech during the Atlanta regional
The Oklahoma Sooners defeated the number two national seed, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, twice to win the Atlanta regional. In those two games, the Sooners played great offensively. This came after they fought back from elimination following a 9-3 loss to Georgia Tech in their first meeting.
In the two games against Georgia Tech in the regional final, Oklahoma had 31 hits. Six of those 31 hits were home runs, and the Sooners had a total of 11 extra-base hits against the Yellow Jackets in those two games.
Despite four-straight weekend series losses to end the year, Oklahoma has fought its way to a super regional for the second time this decade.
If their offense stays hot, they can go toe-to-toe with the Kansas Jayhawks on the road in Lawrence.
