The West Virginia Mountaineers (43-15, 21-9 Big 12) are hosting the Cal Poly Mustangs (39-22, 22-8 Big West) in the 2026 Morgantown super regional during the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
Here is World Baseball Network’s preview of the super regional action this weekend at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
West Virginia makes super regional for the third-straight season
The West Virginia Mountaineers are in a super regional for the third-straight season. In 2024 and 2025, the Mountaineers have gone on the road for super regionals in Chapel Hill and Baton Rouge. They lost both of those super regionals to the North Carolina Tar Heels and the LSU Tigers.
The 2026 Morgantown super regional will be the first super regional at home for West Virginia in its program’s history. The Mountaineers are looking to get to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time as they take on Cal Poly.
The West Virginia offense heads into the Morgantown super regional on a good note. The Mountaineers finished with double figures in hits in their last three games of the Morgantown regional. West Virginia has also been able to stretch hits out for extra bases with 20 extra base hits.
With how good Cal Poly’s pitching was in the Los Angeles regional, the clash between the Mountaineer offense and the Mustang pitching will be a key thing to watch out for in Morgantown.
Cal Poly’s pitching makes a major statement during the Los Angeles regional
The Cal Poly Mustangs head into Morgantown in a super regional for the first time. The Mustangs won the 2026 Los Angeles regional championship after winning all three games they played in.
Pitching was a big part of the game that Cal Poly was able to do well. The Mustangs allowed five runs in the three combined games they played.
The Cal Poly pitching staff had 33 strikeouts across the three regional games they played. They also did not give up free bases too often. In the three Los Angeles regional games, the Cal Poly pitching staff walked just eight batters.
If the Mustangs hit their stride on the mound in the Morgantown super regional, they can provide a strong challenge to West Virginia in their home ballpark.
