Baseball history will come alive once again today as the timeless atmosphere of Rickwood Field sets the stage for another memorable afternoon in one of America’s most iconic ballparks.
One of the oldest professional ballparks in the United States will host a Southern League matchup between the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, and the hometown Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EST.
Both clubs will honor Rickwood Field’s deep baseball roots by wearing tribute uniforms that celebrate the city’s connection to the game.
Continuing that tribute to baseball’s past, the Blue Wahoos will take the field wearing Pensacola Seagulls jerseys, honoring the former feeder club that once competed in the segregated-era Southern baseball leagues.
The Blue Wahoos are expected to bring several notable prospects to Birmingham, including infielder Aiva Arquette, MLB Pipeline’s No. 35 overall prospect, who was recently promoted from High-A. Pensacola’s roster also features right-hander Karson Milbrandt, ranked as the Marlins’ No. 9 prospect, entering the matchup with a 1.06 ERA while ranking among Minor League Baseball’s strikeout leaders. Outfielder Dillon Lewis, Miami’s No. 10 prospect, is also expected to be part of the lineup.
Unlike a typical Minor League game played in a modern stadium filled with LED boards and advanced technology, Wednesday’s matchup at Rickwood Field offers players and fans a rare chance to experience baseball in a historic setting. From the vintage architecture to the timeless atmosphere surrounding the field, the game serves as a reminder of how deeply rooted baseball tradition remains within the sport today.
Opened on Aug. 18, 1910, Rickwood Field remains one of baseball’s most treasured landmarks and famously served as the home of the Birmingham Black Barons, where a 17-year-old Willie Mays began his professional career. Built by industrialist Allen Harvey “Rick” Woodward, the steel-and-concrete stadium has hosted nearly 200 Baseball Hall of Famers.
Beyond baseball, Rickwood Field has also gained recognition through Hollywood, with its classic ballpark setting featured in several films, including the 2013 movie “42” about baseball legend Jackie Robinson.
Rickwood Field underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation ahead of the 2024 MLB at Rickwood Field and MiLB at Rickwood Field events, helping preserve the ballpark while introducing a new generation of fans to one of the sport’s most significant venues.
This game holds far more meaning than a typical Minor League Baseball matchup. Instead of serving as just another stop during the long regular season, Wednesday’s contest at Rickwood Field blends cultural remembrance with modern-day baseball. The game offers fans a rare opportunity to experience the sport in a setting deeply connected to generations of baseball history.
Rickwood Field continues to connect baseball’s past with its present, serving as a stage where today’s rising prospects from the minor leagues play on the same historic ground once shared by legends such as Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Jackie Robinson.
