Cuban catcher Alfredo Fadraga has been declared a free agent and is eligible to sign with any Major League Baseball club as of March 24, BeisbolFR.com’s Francys Romero reported.
Fadraga, 23, played five seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacional with Ciego de Avila, posting a triple slash line of .315/.403/.645 with 21 home runs and 58 RBI in 76 games in the 2021-22 season. He escaped Cuba and went to the Dominican Republic sometime in the past week.
Romero tweeted that Fadraga escaped from the Cuba U-23 team last summer in Aguascalientes, Mexico, but was caught by Mexican authorities and deported back to Cuba. After being returned to Cuba, he was banned from baseball for life.
