Georgia Tech Defeats Wake Forest 6-5 to Complete a Weekend Series Sweep

ATLANTA – On Sunday, April 26, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 6-5 at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The game was 5-5 heading into the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Wake Forest walked Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey. This led to the winning run crossing the plate.

For Georgia Tech, it is their 19th Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win of the season and their 25th win at home in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets’ overall record moved to 36-7 this season.

Georgia Tech head coach James Ramsey talked about the weekend sweep his team got over Wake Forest

“Our guys deserve a lot of credit for competing this way for three straight games,” Ramsey said. “This team is paving their path here and doing things that have not been done in a while.”

Drew Burress and Will Baker hit home runs for the Yellow Jackets

Drew Burress and Will Baker took care of the majority of the scoring for Georgia Tech in their win on Sunday.

Burress hit a home run in the first inning. It was a two-run shot that gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.

Burress is tied for the fourth-most career home runs by a Georgia Tech player in program history.

Will Baker got in on the home run action with a long ball in the third inning. Like Burress, his home run was a two-run shot that gave Georgia Tech the lead back over the Demon Deacons.

Ramsey talked about the big at-bats both Burress and Baker took against Wake Forest.

“You are always trying to get out to a fast start on Sundays,” Ramsey said. “Burress put a great swing on the ball…Baker has been incredible for us all year and has a bright future ahead of him.”

Kent Schmidt also had a big day for Georgia Tech offensively. He had two hits and scored a run. Schmidt also had a great defensive day and led the Yellow Jackets in putouts with eight.

Dylan Loy earns the win out of the bullpen

Dylan Loy earned the win on the mound for Georgia Tech during Sunday’s game. In three innings of work, he struck out three Wake Forest hitters while allowing no runs and just two hits.

It was the Tennessee transfer’s third win of the season for the Yellow Jackets.

Up next for Georgia Tech

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will face off against the Kennesaw State Owls on Tuesday, April 28. The game is at Mickey Dunn Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga., and the first pitch is at 6 p.m. ET.
