Amid one of the most challenging stretches of the 2026 season, Hideki Hashigami stepped into the Yomiuri Giants’ dugout as acting manager, charged with restoring stability to Japan’s most historic baseball club.

Shinnosuke Abe resigned as manager of the Yomiuri Giants on May 26, one day after being arrested following an alleged domestic dispute at his home in Tokyo.

According to reports, Abe had been drinking when he intervened in an argument between his two daughters. Authorities allege that during the confrontation, he grabbed his 18-year-old daughter and forced her to the floor after she responded to him during the dispute.

The incident came to the attention of authorities after the daughter sought guidance through an artificial intelligence application, which directed her to a child guidance center. The center subsequently contacted police, leading to Abe’s arrest at his residence in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward later that evening.

The daughter later told investigators that she was not injured and that the family had quickly reconciled following the incident. She also expressed regret that the matter escalated to police involvement. Abe was released from custody early the following morning.

On May 26, Abe met with Yomiuri Giants owner Toshikazu Yamaguchi and formally submitted his resignation. In a statement, Abe apologized to fans and the organization, saying he had “tarnished the proud tradition” of the franchise.

The sudden departure sent shockwaves through the Japanese baseball community. Although the organization formally accepted his resignation, public support for Abe remained strong. A fan-led petition calling for his potential return in the future has reportedly gathered more than 130,000 signatures, reflecting the divided reaction to his exit.

In the wake of Abe’s departure, the Giants turned to Hashigami to steady the club and guide it through an uncertain stretch of the season.

Chief offensive coach Hashigami was named acting manager. Hashigami became the first person to manage the historic Yomiuri Giants without having previously played for the club.

Hashigami has served as acting manager of the Yomiuri Giants since the resignation of former manager Shinnosuke Abe, stepping into the role during a challenging period for the franchise.

Previously the club’s chief offensive coach, Hashigami quickly assumed leadership responsibilities and became the first manager in Yomiuri Giants history who had not previously played for the organization. His appointment came as the team sought stability amid Shinnosuke Abe’s off-field incident.

Before beginning his coaching career, Hashigami enjoyed a lengthy Nippon Professional Baseball career as an outfielder. He played for the Yakult Swallows, Nippon-Ham Fighters and Hanshin Tigers, establishing himself as a respected veteran throughout Japanese baseball.

Following his playing career, Hashigami built an extensive coaching résumé with several NPB clubs, including the Rakuten Golden Eagles and Seibu Lions, before returning to the Giants’ coaching staff.

Hashigami took over as acting manager at the start of interleague play and wasted little time making adjustments to the roster. He increased playing opportunities for several experienced veterans, including Hayato Sakamoto and Yoshihiro Maru, as the Giants sought to regain momentum and remain competitive in the standings.

Following the high-profile incident that forced Abe to resign, Hashigami urged his players to put emotions aside and focus entirely on the game, successfully holding the team together amid the major media scrutiny.

The Yomiuri Giants recorded a 3-3 mark across their first six games following the managerial change, showing early signs of stability during the transition.

Rather than implementing sweeping changes, Hashigami and the Giants remained committed to the club’s established approach, emphasizing aggressive baserunning and the continued development of younger players. The decision provided stability during a period of transition while allowing the team to maintain its identity on the field.

The Giants have emphasized an aggressive approach on the bases, using speed and smart baserunning to manufacture runs. The strategy reflects a broader commitment to playing fast and putting pressure on opposing defenses.

Offensively, acting manager Hashigami has worked closely with the coaching staff to implement situational, data-informed strategies while reinforcing strong fundamentals at the plate and on the bases.

Under Hashigami’s leadership, the Giants earned a notable victory over the Pacific League-leading Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks shortly after the managerial change. The win provided a positive start to a new chapter for the organization and helped the club refocus its attention on the remainder of the 2026 season. This leads the Giants to refocus player morale and encourage team unity to navigate the remainder of the season.

As the Giants move past this turbulent chapter, the focus has shifted back to on-field performance under Hashigami’s leadership. While questions surrounding the circumstances of Abe’s departure continue to linger, the club has shown early signs of stability during a critical stretch of the 2026 season.
