Excitement has taken over Honduras as it was announced on December 13 that they are preparing to open its first professional baseball stadium. This historic moment for Honduras is being led by Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, the Presidenta Constitucional de la República de Honduras.
In her second year in office, she was able to get this approved and on the ground running as construction has been underway—the historic field of Estadio Chochi Sosa in Tegucigalpa, Honduras which is the capital of Honduras. The stadium was built in 1989, during the presidency of Jose Azcona del Hoyo.
In the history of the MLB, there have been two players born in Honduras to reach the MLB. Gerald Young was the first player born in Tela, Honduras, but went to high school in California. He made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 1987 and played until 1994, also playing in the Rockies and Cardinals organizations.
The second player born in Honduras to play in MLB is Houston Astros utility player Mauricio Dubon. He made his debut in 2019 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He would be traded to the San Francisco Giants that season, and then was traded by them in 2022 to the Houston Astros. Dubon hit .269 in 137 games this past season with four home runs and 47 RBIs.
It isn’t clear when the stadium will be ready for games to be played, but many fans in Honduras are excited about the new experience this will help people in Honduras to experience the sport of baseball. This could really be the beginning to help fund other sports, and to see the growth and development of baseball in Honduras.
