Art Charles, Leones de Yucatan First Baseman, Hits 4 HRs

The (12-3) Leones de Yucatán in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol beat the (6-9) Conspiradores de Querétaro 24-2 on Sunday night. Leones first baseman Art Charles hit four home runs at Estadio Finsus in Huimilpan, Querétaro, Mexico.

Charles became the sixth player in LMB history to record four home runs in a game, according to BeisbolPuro.

Charles had four 2024 LMB regular-season home runs coming into last night’s game. He recorded six hits, 15 RBI, and struck out once in his seven at-bats.

Charles, 33, was born in Bakersfield, Calif., and has played for ten seasons in Mexico between Liga Mexicana de Béisbol and Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico. He is in his sixth season with the Leones de Yucatan, joining the organization during the 2018 regular season.

Charles played with the Charros de Jalisco from 2016 to 18, the Caneros de Los Mochis from 2017 to 18, the Yaquis de Obregon from 2019 to 20, and the Algodoneros de Guasave from 2019 to 20.

He has played 14 seasons between the minor leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2010-12, the Philadelphia Phillies from 2013-15, and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2017.

According to BeisbolPuro, Charles became the 53rd player in LMB history to record six hits in a game.

Charles also had 20 total bases during last night’s win, the most in LMB history during a nine-inning game.

He hit his first home run of the game in the top of the second inning, a grand slam over the right-center field wall off Conspiradores starting pitcher Cristopher Molina, extending the lead to 7-1.

Charles was the third batter in the top of the fourth inning after left fielder Norberto Obeso led off with a ground ball single to center, and right fielder Yadier Drake roped a line drive single to left field. He ripped a line drive three-run home run over the left-center field wall to extend the lead to 11-2 off of relief pitcher Jorge Martinez.

Charles also had a double to center field in the top of the fourth inning off of relief pitcher Javier Rodriguez, scoring center fielder Tomo Otosaka, Obeso, and Drake to make it 15-2.

He drove his third home run of the game over the left-center field wall for a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning off relief pitcher Jose Jose to make it 21-2.

Charles hit a solo home run over the right field wall in the top of the seventh inning, his fourth long ball of the game, off of relief pitcher Miguel Pena.

 

 

The Conspiradores de Querétaro’s pitching staff allowed 26 hits, 24 earned runs, nine walks, 11 strikeouts, and seven home runs. Molina threw two innings and allowed five hits, seven earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts, and two home runs.

The Leones de Yucatan pitching staff allowed eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Leones de Yucatan starting pitcher Francisco Haro threw four innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out six.

The Leones de Yucatán are a half-game back of the first-place (12-2) Diablos Rojos del México in the Zona del Sur. The Conspiradores de Querétaro are in eighth place in the Zona del Sur and six and a half games back of first place.

The Leones de Yucatan will play the (7-8) Guerreros de Oaxaca on April 30 at 9:35 p.m. EST at Parque Kukulcan Alamo in Merida, Mexico. The Conspiradores de Querétaro will play the (6-8) Olmecas de Tabasco on April 30 at 9:00 p.m. EST at Estadio Finsus in Huimilpan, Querétaro, Mexico.
