Liga Mexicana de Beisbol: Sultanes de Monterrey Take Series Opener From Tijuana; Diablos Win Fourth Straight In Extras

Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos (9-7) 4, Caliente de Durango (7-9) 0 – Tecos starter Daniel Mengden allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings, walking none and striking out three as Dos Laredos shut out Durango in the series opener. Cade Gotta’s single with two outs in the seventh scored Luis de los Santos and Francisco Arcia, and Harold Ramirez followed with a double that scored Trayce Thompson and Gotta.

Pericos de Puebla (9-7) 10, Tigres de Quintana Roo (7-9) 5 – Lorenzo Cedrola hit a solo homer, and David Rodriguez and Moises Gomez each hit a two-run homer for Puebla, which improved to two games over .500. Cedrola and Rodriguez each went 3-for-4, and Luis Castro added a single and a double, each driving in a run for the Pericos. Manuel Boscan hit a two-run homer for Quintana Roo.

Diablos Rojos del Mexico (11-5) 8, El Aguila de Veracruz (8-8) 7 – Maikel Franco’s RBI single in the eighth got the Diablos within a run, and then Carlos Perez tied the game at seven with an RBI single two pitches later. In the 10th, Perez drove in Rio Ruiz with a single to end the game, giving the Diablos their fourth consecutive win in extra innings and their fifth straight win. Robinson Cano added a solo homer for the Reds.

Guerreros de Oaxaca (9-7) 4, Conspiradores de Queretaro (7-9) 1 – Starter Matt Givin allowed three hits over six scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two as the Guerreros took the first game of the series. Luis Barrera hit a two-run homer for Oaxaca, and Juniel Querecuto drove in the other two runs. Daniel Castro had a double and an RBI for Queretaro in the loss.

Olmecas de Tabasco (5-11) 4 Leones de Yucatan (7-9) 3 (11 Innings) – Angelo Castellano went 1-for-5, but made the one hit count, singling home the game-winner in the bottom of the 11th for Tabasco. Yunior Severino hit a solo homer for the Olmecas that tied the game at three in the eighth, and five Tabasco relievers combined to allow just two hits and two walks after the seventh.

Piratas de Campeche (7-9) 15, Bravos de Leon (10-6) 12 – Andrew Stevenson and Andrew Young each drove in three runs for Campeche, with Young hitting a three-run homer in the first and Young going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in the eighth as the Piratas won a wild one in Leon. Sandber Pimentel went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer for Leon, and Gabriel Cancel hit a two-run homer for the Bravos.

Acereros de Monclova (8-9) 4, Saraperos de Saltillo (4-12) 3 (10 Innings) – Jacob Rhinesmith’s double in the top of the 10th got Aldo Nunez home with the winning run as the Acereros got closer to even on the season. Ramon Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the first, and Juan Mora tied the game for Monclova with an RBI single in the ninth. Saltillo’s Chris Carter hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth.

Rieleros de Aguascalientes (9-7) 13, Dorados de Chihuahua (6-10) 11 – The Dorados led by seven after 2 1/2 innings, only to cough up the lead by allowing five runs in the bottom of the third and six more in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Rieleros their ninth win of the year. Angel Reyes went 4-for-5 with two homers, a solo shot in the second and a three-run shot in the sixth, and Maikel Serrano and Jose Rondon each homered in the third for Aguascalientes.

Charros de Jalisco (9-7) 12, Algodoneros de Union Laguna (6-10) 11 (10 Innings) – The Algodoneros took the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth, but the Charros tied the game on a Kyle Garlick sac fly in the bottom of the inning and won the game in the 10th on an RBI single by Mateo Gil that scored Allen Cordoba. Garlick had a three-run homer in the sixth for Jalisco, and six different Charros had a multi-hit game. Isan Diaz homered in the loss for Union Laguna.

Sultanes de Monterrey (12-4) 6, Toros de Tijuana (10-5) 1 – Ramiro Pena’s fifth inning grand slam keyed the Sultanes to their 12th win of the year as they opened up a game and a half lead on Tijuana in the series opener. Josh Lester added a solo homer, and starter Nolan Kingham allowed one unearned run over five innings, allowing three hits and a walk, striking out five.
