Mexico has announced its roster for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, which will be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 31-Aug. 7. Mexico will compete in Group B alongside Colombia, Nicaragua and Panama.
Players to watch
Daniel Zazueta:
The 25-year-old pitched for the Marineros de Ensenada in the Liga Norte de México. The league was suspended from 2023-25 before returning this season as a developmental league affiliated with the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol. Zazueta posted a 0.59 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings for Ensenada before earning a promotion to the Pericos de Puebla. He also pitched for Tucson during the winter season, recording a 4.82 ERA with nine strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings while serving primarily as a situational left-hander. He should play a key role out of the bullpen for Mexico and could emerge as the team’s top reliever.
André Sánchez:
The 23-year-old spent four seasons in the Los Angeles Angels organization from 2022-25, reaching High-A in 2023. He pitched for Tucson this past winter, posting a 3.09 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 11 2/3 relief innings. This season, Sánchez has pitched for the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol, where he owns a 5.48 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 23 innings. With Mexico lacking experienced starting pitching, Sánchez could see time in the rotation and become one of the club’s most important arms.
Italó Motta:
Motta is the most experienced position player on Mexico’s roster in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol and is expected to start in the infield. He has a .599 OPS with five RBIs in 66 games for the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos this season.
Mexico opens the tournament against Panama on July 31 before facing Colombia on Aug. 1 and Nicaragua on Aug. 2. The top three teams from each group will advance to the super round, scheduled for Aug. 3-5. The top two teams in the super round will advance to the gold medal game on Aug. 7, with the winner also earning a berth in the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The third- and fourth-place teams will play for the bronze medal. Mexico won gold in 2023 in El Salvador and is looking to be the nation since Cuba in 1998 to repeat as champions.
