Southeastern Conference Championship (SEC)

No. 1 Tennessee 4, No. 11 LSU 3

On Sunday, the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the LSU Tigers 4-3 in nine innings to win the SEC Baseball Tournament Championship. This is the fifth title in program history and the second in the previous three seasons.

Tennessee, the No. 1 team in the tournament, had its hands full with LSU, scoring runs in bunches in their last few games. Tennessee outfielder Hunter Ensley added some offense of his own, going 4-for-4. Ensley hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh, the winning run in the game.

The game’s biggest hit came from Billy Amick, who launched a three-run home run in the top of the third to put the Volunteers ahead 3-1. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, LSU scored two in the inning to cut the lead to one. However, Tennessee held on for the victory.

Blake Burke of Tennessee was named the SEC Baseball Tournament MVP for his play at first base and with the bat, and outfielder Kavares Tears was named to the SEC All-Tournament team.

With the win, Tennessee reached the 50-win mark for the third consecutive season and is the only collegiate baseball program to do so this season, reports the University of Tennessee Athletics official website.

Tennessee awaits the announcement of their first opponent for the NCAA Knoxville Regional, which begins Friday, May 31.
