One Thing From Game Two of Every MLB Wild Card Series

There were three sweeps in the Wild Card round, but two teams will play an elimination game on Thursday night to set up a date with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Milwaukee Brewers 5, New York Mets 3 – This was arguably the best game of this young postseason. The Brewers trailed 3-2 going into the eighth inning, but they rallied just as they have all season. Twenty year-old phenom Jackson Chourio hit his second game-tying home run of the night to even things up. A Willy Adames single followed by a Garrett Mitchell home run gave the Brewers a 5-3 advantage. A win-or-go-home Game 3 will decide who heads to Philadelphia for the National League Division Series.

Kansas City Royals 2, Baltimore Orioles 1 – The Orioles’ pitching delivered a strong performance for the second straight game. However, for the second straight game, the offense could not come through. Cedric Mullins’ solo home run was the only run the Orioles scored in the entire series. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in the winning run in the sixth inning with an RBI single. The Royals will face the Yankees in the American League Division Series.

San Diego Padres 5, Atlanta Braves 4 – The Padres looked to be on their way to an easy win early in this one after a five-run second inning that included a home run and a bases-loaded triple put Atlanta on the ropes. However, home runs by Jorge Soler and Michael Harris II made it a one-run game heading into the ninth inning. The Braves went down in order as their season officially came to an end.

Detroit Tigers 5, Houston Astros 2 – This series may have been the start of a special run for the Detroit Tigers. After becoming sellers at the trade deadline, they knocked off the Houston Astros. With the bases loaded, Josh Hader on the mound and the game tied, Andy Ibáñez stepped up to pinch hit and delivered a bases-clearing triple to put Detroit in front. The Tigers will face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS, while the Astros’ streak of seven straight American League Championship Series appearances comes to an end.
