On Tuesday, July 21, the San Diego Padres signed second-round draft pick Elliot Lascelles to an overslot deal. Lascelles went to the Padres with the 60th overall pick.
Lascelles signed a deal for $2.8 million. The slot value for the 60th overall pick was $1.56 million. According to MLB Pipeline reporter Jim Callis, it is a record deal for a Canadian position player in the MLB draft.
Lascelles and his Canadian roots, draft league performance
Lascelles wrapped up a high school baseball career at Upper Canada College in Toronto. He committed to play college baseball for the Yale Bulldogs in the Ivy League.
According to Perfect Game, Lascelles was a top-five player from Ontario in the 2026 high school class.
In the 2026 MLB Draft League, Lascelles has performed very well. In 33 at-bats, he tallied 13 hits, resulting in a .394 batting average. Lascelles also had an on-base percentage of .523 and an OPS of 1.068.
The San Diego draftee also showed off some speed in the MLB Draft League with eight stolen bases. He also finished with 10 RBIs and has 10 walks compared to just three strikeouts.

- Damarcus Rideout-Carter, Heart Lake Secondary School in Ontario (Pittsburgh Pirates, Round 14, 408th overall)
