TCU Horned Frogs Lose Big-Time Reliever Ben Abeldt for the Entire 2025 Season

Some unfortunate news broke in Fort Worth, Texas, for the TCU Horned Frogs. One of the highly regarded relievers in college baseball, Ben Abeldt, will miss the 2025 season. He is getting surgery on a tear in his UCL.

The southpaw from McKinney, Texas, had a brilliant two seasons to begin his career with TCU. He has a career ERA of 2.83 and has struck out 125 batters in 99.1 innings of work.

Abeldt also held opposing hitters to a .215 batting average during his first two seasons in Fort Worth in 2023 and 2024. He also has 10 saves in his career thus far.

The Horned Frog’s prized left-hander was recently named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watchlist. This award goes to college baseball’s best relief pitcher. Past winners of this award include Evan Aschenbeck from Texas A&M and Golden Spikes Award winner Kevin Kopps from Arkansas.

This is a tough pill for TCU to swallow right before the season. It will be interesting to see how it affects their season. They had the 8th best odds to win the 2025 national championship, according to FanDuel back in December.

Last season, TCU finished the season 33-21 and were 14-16 in Big 12 play.

The Horned Frogs open the 2025 season on Friday, Feb. 14. They will then travel to play the San Diego Toreros in a four-game series that will last through Monday. San Diego was ranked first in the WCC in the preseason media poll, making them a tough test for TCU to begin the year.
