The Tigres del Licey are once again going to the Serie Final. The reigning champs are looking to three-peat and win the Caribbean Series for the second time in three seasons as well.
The Tigres beat the Estrellas Orientales 2-1 on a walk-off in the 10th inning on Friday night to clinch their spot in the championship. Gustavo Núñez hit an RBI single to win the game. The Tigres currently have an 11-3 record in the round robin semifinal round. Right behind them arethe Leones del Escogido at 9-5. At 5-9, in third place, the Estrellas have an outside chance at clinching a spot in the championship.
The winner of the Serie Final will go on to the Caribbean Series. The Tigres have secured their chance to play in the Serie Final behind a great stretch of play from Sergio Alcántara. He had just three home runs in the Regular season with a .803 OPS. However, in the round robin, he has hit four home runs and has a .891 OPS.
On the mound, Jean Carlos Mejia has continued to dominate out of the bullpen. He had 13 saves in the regular season and has tacked on four more in the round robin semifinal round. He has a 1.08 ERA in the semifinal round.
The Tigres del Licey have won 24 League Championships in LIDOM, and then Leones del Escogido have won 16. In the Serie Final, the Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido have met nine times, and it will be the tenth time the two teams will face off for a chance to play in the Caribbean Series.
