It was a disappointing weekend for the Virginia Cavaliers who took a series loss to the Boston College Eagles to begin ACC play. Despite winning on Saturday, the team dropped the games that were played on Friday and Sunday.
So, what went wrong in these matchups for Virginia?
On Friday, Boston College got the win by a score of 7-4. Despite getting nine hits, UVA also left nine runners on base which did not help in a three-run difference.
The Cavaliers’ bullpen also did not have a great day either as Matt Lanzendorfer and Ryan Osinski gave up a combined five earned runs.
On Sunday, Boston College earned the series win after dropping Saturday’s matchup. The Eagles won this game 6-3 and Virginia once again struggled with leaving runners in scoring position. In this matchup, the Cavaliers left eight runners on base.
Much like Friday’s game, this made a huge difference in a game decided by three runs.
Virginia’s head coach Brian O’Connor spoke about the defeat they took in the series after Sunday’s game.
“It comes down to how you perform in the clutch…We had opportunities. They [Boston College] cashed in on theirs and we didn’t. Hopefully we continue to learn from it and be better next time.”
The Cavaliers will try to bounce back in their next midweek matchup against the Maryland Terrapins. The game will be played on Tuesday, Mar. 11, at Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Fredericksburg. The ballpark is usually home to the Fredericksburg Nationals, the Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
The first pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. EST.
