Winter Ball Roundup: Caguas Evens Series in LBPRC; Estrellas, Tiburones Continue to Roll

The Criollos de Caguas evened the best-of-nine LBPRC championship series at one game apiece with a 13-4 trouncing of the Gigantes de Carolina Saturday night.

Caguas manufactured six runs in the bottom of the third and six of nine starters for the Criollos had at least one RBI. Johneshwy Fargas went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Christian Koss went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI for the Criollos.

Game three of the LBPRC championship series is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. EST Sunday. All LBPRC games are streamed live via the league’s facebook page.

Puig’s Homer Gives Tiburones Another Win – Yasiel Puig went 3-for-6 with a double and hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning, driving in the go-ahead run, as the Tiburones de La Guaira improved to 8-1 in the LVBP round robin by beating the Bravos de Margarita 8-5 in 11 innings.

Anthony Jimenez followed Puig with a solo homer in the 11th, and Danry Vasquez went 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Tiburones.

The Bravos fell to 3-6 in the round robin and are one game ahead of the last-place Tigres de Aragua. The Tigres will face the Bravos Sunday at 3 p.m. EST. The Tiburones are off on Sunday.

Cardenales 8, Tigres 0 – Five hits and two walks were all the offense the Tigres de Aragua could manage Saturday night, as they were shut out 8-0 by the Cardenales de Lara.

Starter Max Castillo allowed just three hits and a walk over seven innings of work, fanning five and earning the win, while relievers Rodrigo Benoit and Pedro Garcia finished out the win for the Cardenales, who improved to 5-5 with the win.

The Cardenales de Lara will face the Leones del Caracas at 5 p.m. EST on Sunday. All LVBP games can be streamed via Beisbolplay.com with a paid subscription.

Estrellas Orientales Edge Tigres del Licey 1-0 – Webster Rivas’ eighth-inning sac fly sent Alfredo Reyes home with the game’s only run as the Estrellas Orientales edged the Tigres del Licey and improved to 10-4 in the 18-game LIDOM round robin.

The Tigres went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and fell to 8-6 with the loss, but hold a two-game lead over the Leones del Escogido for second place.

The Tigres face the Leones at 4 p.m. EST Sunday.

Leones del Escogido 7, Gigantes del Cibao 6 – Former New York Met Starling Marte went 3-for-5 and had a single in the bottom of the sixth that advanced the winning run to third base as the Leones del Escogido topped the Gigantes del Cibao 7-6 in the LIDOM round robin.

The 35-year-old Marte had two singles and a double in the game as the Leones improved to 6-8.

The Gigantes del Cibao fell to 4-10 in the round robin and will be mathematically eliminated with another loss or another Tigres del Licey win.
