Winter Ball Roundup: Estrellas Orientales Take Game One; Lara Headed to LVBP Final; LBPRC Series Going to Game 8

Miguel Sano clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and the Estrellas Orientales rallied back from a 5-4 deficit to take game one of the LIDO championship series 7-5 from the Tigres del Licey Saturday night.

Francisco Mejia got Licey on the board with an RBI double, Dawel Lugo drew the Tigres within one, driving in Ramon Hernandez with a ground out in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Estrellas answered back in the bottom of the sixth when Lewin Diaz drove Alfredo Reyes home with a single to center.

Licey scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Gustavo Nunez scored on fielding error by Estrellas shortstop Willy Vasquez, and Francisco Mejia drove in two runs with a single to center.

Back-to-back RBI singles by Robinson Cano and Webster Rivas in the bottom of the seventh gave the Estrellas a 6-5 lead, and they’d add another run in the eighth to make it 7-5 on an RBI single by Vidal Brujan.

Starter Marcelo Martinez went five innings for the Estrellas, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out five.

Game two of the LIDOM championship series is Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. EST, and can be streamed on MLB.tv with a paid subscription.

Hermosillo Takes Game One Of LAMP Finals 8-2 – Hermosillo got three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, taking game one of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico championship series 8-2 from the Venados de Mazatlan Saturday.

Alberth Martinez drove in Jasson Atondo with a single, and Agustin Parillo followed with a single that scored Isaac Paredes and Martinez for a 3-0 lead.

Former Major Leaguer Aaron Altherr launched a three-run homer to left-center in the third to give the Naranjeros a 6-2 lead.

Hermosillo added two more in the seventh when Martinez hit a two-run single to center.

Four Naranjeros relievers combined to lock it down, allowing just one hit and no walks over the final four innings.

Game two of the series in Sunday night at 7 p.m. EST and can be streamed on Extrabase.tv for a fee.

Gigantes de Carolina Still Alive in LBPRC – The Gigantes de Carolina and Criollos de Caguas are headed to game eight in the best-of-nine championship series in Puerto Rico.

With the game tied at one apiece going into the bottom of the eighth, the Gigantes scored four runs, sending the home crowd at Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker home happy with a 5-1 Carolina win.

Felix Stevens drove in Bryan Torres with a single to center. Two batters later, Jan Hernandez ripped a two-run double to left to make it 4-1. Aldemar Burgos added an RBI single to make it 5-1 Carolina.

Game eight of the LBPRC series is Sunday at 6:15 p.m. EST and can be streamed via the league’s facebook page.

Cardenales de Lara Clinch LVBP Finals With 11-5 Win – The Cardenales de Lara will meet the Tiburones de La Guaira in the championship series of the Liga Venezolana Beisbol Profesional, having clinched a berth in the series with an 11-5 win over the Bravos de Margarita Saturday night.

The Cardenales got seven runs in the bottom of the second, including three on a homer by Jermaine Palacios and two more on a round-tripper by Rangel Ravelo.

The LVBP final will begin on Tuesday, when the Cardenales face the Tiburones de La Guaira at Estadio Universitario at 6 p.m. EST. The game can be streamed via Beisbolplay.com with a paid subscription.
