Osday Silva, who led Cuba’s Serie Nacional in home runs during the 2023 season, has left the Cuba delegation at the 2023 Caribbean Cup in Puerto Rico, Francys Romero reported Monday.
Silva hit 18 home runs in 73 games with Santiago de Cuba, racking up 80 RBI and a .336 average this past year.
Born in 1995 according to Baseball Reference, Silva is the fifth Cuban player to leave a contract or delegation this year, joining Franky Quintana, who left the Caribbean Cup delegation earlier this week, Ivan Prieto, who left Team Cuba at the World Baseball Classic in Miami, Yobanys Millan, who left the Alazanes de Granma at the Baseball Champions League in Merida, Mexico, and Pedro Revilla, who didn’t return to Cuba following the 2023 Nippon Professional Baseball season in Japan.
Cuba won the 2023 Caribbean Cup, defeating Curacao in the final game on Sunday 3-1.
Later in the day Monday, Romero reported that Yeudis Reyes, who pitched for Cuba at the World Baseball Classic in March, had also left the Cuban delegation when the team was at the airport in Puerto Rico.
Reyes had pitched for Guantanamo in the Serie Nacional from the 2016-17 season through the S.N.’s final season as a winter league in 2021-22. He pitched for the Cafetaleros in the first season of the Cuban Elite League in 2022, making 13 appearances with a 0.53 ERA. He made one appearance in the World Baseball Classic, throwing one scoreless inning.
