The second semifinal game of the 2025 Caribbean Series in Mexicali will be between Mexico and Puerto Rico. The two teams played on the first day of round-robin games on Jan. 31, where Mexico won 8-1.
Since then, Mexico has continued dominating the tournament field, going 4-0. They stand undefeated heading into the semifinals.
Can Puerto Rico Stop this Red-Hot Mexico Team?
Following their loss to Mexico in their first game of the tournament, they went on to win two games against Japan and the Dominican Republic.
The game against the Dominican Republic was a massive come-from-behind victory. Puerto Rico was losing 7-4 heading into the late innings, but a five-run eighth inning helped them earn a 10-7 win.
In short, this was a great way for the Puerto Ricans to end round-robin play before they entered the semifinals.
The offense that showed up against the Dominican Republic will need to show up against a Mexico team that has been out-pitching everyone it has played.
Puerto Rico had 11 hits against the D.R., compared to four hits against Mexico the first time the two teams played.
What is at Stake for Both Teams?
Puerto Rico and Mexico are in a position to hunt down the Caribbean Series championship. A win in tonight’s game will put that team in the championship matchup in Mexicali on Friday.
Both countries have yet to win the Caribbean Series this decade. The last time Mexico won was in 2016 in Santo Domingo, D.R. The last time Puerto Rico won was in 2018 in Guadalajara, Mexico. That was when the country won its second straight Caribbean Series under manager Luis Matos.
The two teams will play the night’s second semifinal game in Estadio Nido de los Aguilas and play at 10 p.m. E.T.
The winner will play the winner of Venezuela and the Dominican Republic in the championship game on Friday, Feb. 7.
