On Friday, the Tennessee Volunteers got big news as they were able to flip Billy Carlson, a major 2025 MLB draft prospect.
Billy Carlson, the 5th best high school player in the 2025 high school class, announced on Instagram that he will now be committed to the University of Tennessee. He was previously committed to Vanderbilt.
Carlson has played in the infield, mainly shortstop, and pitched as a right-hander during his time playing for Corona High School in Corona, Calif. Baseball America has him 10th overall on their 2025 MLB draft big board.
A lot of scouts seem really impressed with Carlson defensively in the field as they have called him the best defensive shortstop in the 2025 class. At the Perfect Game National Showcase, he touched 99 miles per hour on a throw to first base during defensive reps.
His batting during 2024 was well beyond the national average. In 33 games, he has batted .367 with a .475 on-base percentage. He also is active in scoring while hitting with 21 RBI in 36 hits. He also added 29 runs himself.
Last season, he helped Corona High School to a 30-3 overall record and a 15-0 record in Big VIII League play. Corona finished first in the league and was the number one team in the country last season.
This is a huge grab for head coach Tony Vitello and his Tennessee Volunteers to get a good kick start to 2025 high school recruiting. The program is coming off its first national championship in program history and that immediately translated to high school recruiting. The Vols were able to land the number one overall high school class during the 2024 cycle.
According to Perfect Game, Tennessee’s 2025 recruiting class ranks 4th overall behind LSU, Texas, and Arkansas.
