The 2025 Caribbean Series host country went undefeated in Round Robin play in convincing fashion.
Mexico outscored its opponents 19-4 and now has a 4-0 record heading into the semi-final games in Mexicali on Wednesday, Feb. 5. With the day off on Feb. 4, they will officially be the only team in the field of five countries to finish round robin play unbeaten.
Looking at the run differential, great pitching has helped Mexico thrive in the tournament so far.
During their first game back on Jan. 31 against Puerto Rico, David Reyes got the start and went seven innings. He struck out four batters and gave up just one walk, one earned run, and one hit.
Mexico’s bullpen held Puerto Rico down for the final two innings when Reyes exited and gave up no hits and no walks. Mexico went on to win the game 8-1.
In their second game against Venezuela, Mexico’s offense was not as good as their first game. However, their pitching remained just as strong.
Manny Bañuelos went deep like Reyes and pitched six innings. He gave up just one earned run and walked no batters, forcing Venezuela to earn their base runners.
Mexico’s bullpen had shut down stuff again following Bañuelos exiting the game. They gave up no runs and no walks in the final three innings. All three pitchers that made appearances out of the bullpen just gave up one hit each.
Mexico defeated Venezuela with this pitching effort and moved to a 2-0 record with a 2-1 win.
The biggest game of the tournament came as two 2-0 teams battled on Feb. 2. Mexico took on the Dominican Republic. Much like the game against Venezuela, it was a low-scoring battle.
Ronald Medrano got the start for Mexico. Just like the two other starters before him, he went deep into the game, getting five innings of work. He gave up just two hits over that stretch.
Upon his exit, Mexico played four relievers in the final four innings of the game. Each of those players gave up no runs and made five combined strikeouts.
The pitching staff gave up three hits to an undefeated Dominican Republic team. More importantly, they shut out the other undefeated team in Mexicali to move to 3-0 following a 2-0 win.
Mexico’s final game in round-robin play came against Japan, which was winless in the tournament.
Despite giving up many hits, Mexico kept the Japanese from ultimately scoring.
Luis Rodriguez got the start and went five innings while giving up just one earned run.
Five Mexican relievers went out to close out the game. They gave up a combined one earned run and struck out five Japan batters.
Mexico also gave up just one walk in the game, once again forcing their opponent to earn their base runners. They won this game 7-2 and finished round-robin play with a red-hot 4-0 record.
The home country of the 2025 Caribbean Series has been the best team in the event thus far. They will face Puerto Rico in the semi-final round in Mexicali.
