CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan will undergo further tests after leaving Saturday’s game with a tight hamstring.
Kwan, who entered the day leading the American League with a .356 batting average, told manager Steve Vogt he felt some tightness in his hamstring while making a running catch down the foul line in Cleveland’s 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Vogt said Kwan was pulled in the fourth inning out of an abundance of caution because it’s early in the season and the Guardians don’t want to take any chances with their leadoff hitter and two-time Gold Glove winner.
Vogt said Kwan will have more imaging tests and be re-evaluated. The team is expected to have more information on his status Sunday, when the Guardians and Angels wrap up their three-game series.
Kwan was replaced in the fourth inning by Gabriel Arias.
The 26-year-old Kwan has become one of the AL’s top young players in just two seasons. After hitting .298 as a rookie, he batted .268 in 2023 while winning his second straight Gold Glove for defensive excellence.
Kwan is off to a great start this season. He leads the league in hits and already has seven three-hit games.
