Boston Red Sox Acquire OF Garrett Cooper From Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs traded outfielder Garrett Cooper to the Boston Red Sox on April 27 for cash considerations.

Cooper, 33, was born in Torrance, Calif., and played eight seasons in the MLB, starting with the New York Yankees in 2017, the Miami Marlins from 2018-23, and the San Diego Padres in 2023.

Cooper was selected once as an All-Star in 2022.

On March 1, he signed a minor league contract with the Cubs and was invited to big league camp. On the same day, he was assigned to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs selected Cooper’s contract on March 28 from Triple-A Iowa.

Cooper played in 12 games to start the season on the North Side and batted .270 with 41 plate appearances. He had 10 hits, one double, one triple, one home run, six RBI, four walks, and 13 strikeouts before being traded to Boston.

He started in three games at first base for the Cubs through 26 innings. Cooper also played left field in two games through three innings and had one chance and one putout.

During spring training, Cooper played in 13 games with 36 plate appearances and batted .250 with eight hits, two doubles, three home runs, six RBI, four walks, and 11 strikeouts.

Last season, Cooper started with Miami before he was traded to San Diego on August 1, 2023, with right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds in exchange for left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers.

With the Marlins, Cooper batted .256, playing in 82 games with 324 plate appearances, ripping 78 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 46 RBI, 17 walks, 97 strikeouts, and a .723 OPS before he was traded to the Padres.

Cooper played in 41 games in San Diego and hit .239 with 133 plate appearances, smacking 28 hits, seven doubles, four home runs, 15 RBI, 14 walks, and 35 strikeouts before he elected free agency on November 2, 2023.

During his eight seasons in the MLB, Cooper has a lifetime average of .269 playing in 493 games with 1,854 plate appearances, recording 447 hits, 92 doubles, seven triples, 57 home runs, 228 RBI, one stolen base, 154 walks, 497 strikeouts, and a .772 OPS.

Cooper will be splitting time at first base with Bobby Dalbec for the Red Sox for the 2024 regular season.
