Entering this past week, the California Golden Bears were below .500 at 9-10 overall and were 2-4 in ACC play with series losses to Duke and Virginia.
However, head coach Mike Neu’s team is riding a five-game winning streak heading into the last week of March.
Last Tuesday, they beat the Saint Mary’s Gaels on the road in Moraga, Calif., 13-7. The Golden Bears put up 17 hits. Left fielder Carl Schmidt had a big day with two hits, a double and a home run, and six RBI.
The midweek win over the Gaels led to the winning streak. Cal then headed into a weekend series against the Stanford Cardinal on the road at Sunken Diamond.
On Friday, the Golden Bears went up 6-0 after just two innings and did not look back. They put up 16 hits in the game to win 13-3 in a seven-inning mercy rule. Cal hit six doubles and three home runs, with two of those home runs coming from catcher Alex Birge.
During Saturday’s game, Cal clinched the series win with a 13-4 victory. The Golden Bears had 14 hits which included three doubles and three triples. Right fielder Jacob French had two of the triples and finished with two RBIs.
In Sunday’s game, Cal clinched the sweep with a 6-5 win over the Cardinal in extra innings. The Golden Bears had 11 hits. Three of those hits came from third baseman Cade Campbell who hit a home run.
Then, to round out the win streak, Cal defeated the San Francisco Dons 10-6 on Monday. They had 12 hits in this game, and Schmidt had another good outing with three hits, and Jarren Advincula homered.
In total, Cal has 70 hits over the course of this five-game win streak against Saint Mary’s, Stanford, and San Francisco. They now sit safely above .500 at 14-10 and are 5-4 in ACC play.
A series sweep over their top rival and a five-game win streak has the Golden Bears feeling good. All of these wins this past week came on the road as well.
Up Next – The Golden Bears will remain on the road for their fourth ACC series. The head east to play the Louisville Cardinals at Jim Patterson Stadium. The first pitch on Friday, March 28, is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
