St. Louis Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera has withdrawn from Panama’s World Baseball Classic squad.
Herrera will remain at Cardinals’ spring training in Jupiter, Fla., rather than travel to Phoenix, where Panama will play in Pool C starting on March 11.
The No. 7 prospect in the Cards’ system according to MLB Pipeline, Hererra made his major league debut for St. Louis on May 24, 2022, against Toronto. In 11 games with St. Louis last season, Herrera went 2-for-18 with one RBI before returning to Triple-A Memphis.
With Memphis last season, Herrera slashed .268/.374/.396 with six homers and 34 RBI.
Paolo Espino, Miguel Cienfuegos and Leonard Jones have also withdrawn from Panama’s WBC squad.
Panama opens World Baseball Classic play against Cuba at 11:30 p.m. ET on March 9 at Taichung International Baseball Stadium in Taichung, Taiwan. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and streamed on fuboTV.
