Chicago White Sox Promote Cuban Catching Prospect Edgar Quero

The Chicago White Sox have promoted catcher Edgar Quero to Major League Baseball and intend to place the 22-year-old on the active roster for Thursday’s game against the Athletics at Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Francys Romero was the first to report the switch-hitter’s promotion from Triple-A Charlotte to MLB on Wednesday night.

Quero, a native of Cienfuegos, Cuba, is the No. 62-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline’s 2025 Top 100 Prospect List and the No. 6 prospect in the White Sox organization. He signed an international free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels in February 2021. Quero was a part of the trade package that sent starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to the Halos at the 2023 trade deadline.

Quero batted .333/.444/.412 with a .856 OPS and one home run in 63 plate appearances to begin 2025 with Triple-A Charlotte. In 2024, he played 72 games at Double-A Birmingham and finished the season with a 26-game stint with the Charlotte Knights.

“Obviously quality at-bats from both sides of the plate, just a lot of confidence,” White Sox first-year manager Will Venable told MLB.com’s Scott Merkin on Wednesday about what he expects from the young catcher. “Just feel like he’s a guy who believes that he’s ready and looks like he’s ready. We all think that he is.”

Defense behind the plate is Quero’s most significant question mark as he develops his overall game.

“He’s [Quero] making progress with his receiving, framing, and blocking, but may not become more than a fringy defender,” Quero’s MLB Pipeline profile reads. “He has average arm strength but needs to improve his accuracy because throwing errors have been a repeated issue, including 10 in 75 games last year.”

Quero is not on the 40-man roster, so the White Sox must open a spot to accommodate his arrival.
