Colombia has one of the deepest rosters regarding major league talent, as 11 players on their roster have played in an MLB game. Colombia will be managed by Jose Mosquera. Jaime Del Valle will serve as first base coach, while Ronald Ramirez handles duties as third base coach. Dayan Diaz will be the team’s pitching coach, while Jair Fernandez will be the team’s hitting coach. Former MLB catcher Jhonathan Solano, brother of Donovan Solano, will serve as Colombia’s bench coach.
Colombia’s starting rotation will be led by veterans Julio Teheran and Jose Quintana. Teheran is a two-time All-Star in 13 seasons in MLB. He has played with the Braves, Angels, Tigers, Brewers, and Mets organizations. In 2024, Teheran only made one start with the Mets, posting a 13.50 ERA in two and two-thirds innings. As for Jose Quintana, he would pitch the entire season in the Mets organization, helping them in their postseason run. Quintana pitched to a 10-10 record in 31 starts, posting a 3.75 ERA, striking out 135 batters across 170.1 innings of work. Both Teheran and Quintana are currently free agents.
Colombia will certainly get a boost in their lineup, adding Gio Urshela into the mix. The Athletics granted him permission to represent Cuba in the WBC Qualifiers. Urshela had played on their WBC team during 2023, where for 2024, he would play between the Tigers and Braves organizations. Through 128 games, Urshela hit for a .250 average, hitting nine home runs and driving in 52 RBIs.
As for their bullpen, Nabil Crismatt could look to provide valuable innings as a long reliever. Crismatt made his MLB debut in 2020 with the St. Louis Cardinals and has pitched in the Padres, Diamondbacks, and most recently, the Dodgers organization for 2024. Crismatt appeared in five games in 2024, going 1-1, with a 2.57 ERA, striking out six batters in seven innings. He is currently a free agent. Pitchers who could be in the mix to lock down saves for Colombia include Luis Escobar, Rio Gomez, and Jhon Romero.
Colombia’s first game for the WBC Qualifiers will be played on March 2, when they face Brazil. Following that, they will play China and Germany, as two teams will be able to move on for a shot to compete at the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
