With the regular season coming to a close soon, the Estrellas Orinetales are pulling away from the rest of the field. Here’s a recap of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (LIDOM) from this weekend.

Estrellas take hold of the top spot after walk-off win

The Estrellas have won four of their last five games with two wins coming against the Leones del Escogido, who are challenging them for the top spot on the table. On December 7, Jose Barrero hit a walk-off single against the Leones in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Tigres win 2nd edition of Titanes del Caribe

After losing the first matchup at Citi Field in November, the Tigres del Licey swept the Águilas Cibaeñas over the weekend. They won both games against their rivals. The first Game was an 11-3 route, while Game 2 was a 4-3 thriller. Samuel Múñez’s grand slam in the second inning was enough offense to secure the sweep, though. Both teams will resume regular season play this week

Kelvin Gutiérrez continues to shine

Gutiérrez hit his 10th LIDOM home run on Sunday night, and it was a big one. His three-run go-ahead home run in the eighth inning lifted the Gigantes del Ciabo and handed the Leones their second straight loss. They have lost eight of their last ten games. It was Gutiérrez’s second home run of the season in 27 games. He has a .270 batting average and 15 RBI.

LIDOM Standings

  1. Estrellas Orientales (24-16)
  2. Tigres del Licey (20-16)
  3. Leones del Escogido (21-19)
  4. Aguilas Cibaeñas (18-18)
