With just 46 regular season games left to play, the top of the standings is shaping up for an exciting finish. Here’s a recap of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (LIDOM) weekend.
Toros upset Estralles on Sunday
The Leones del Escogido got some help on Sunday with an Estrellas Orientales loss. The Estrellas were upset by the Toros del Este. The Toros are tied for the worst record in the league at 13-21. However, they did enough on Sunday to upset the Estrellas in 11 innings. Alen Hanson started the inning on second base and stole third base, but an error allowed him to score the winning run. The Estrellas are currently in second place at 20-15, with the Leones in first at 20-14.
Tigres dominate to keep pace with Leones and Estralles
While the Leones and Estrellas are both at 20 wins, fighting for first place, the Tigres del Licey are not to be forgotten. They have 19 wins and are now on a four-game win streak after their 8-1 win over the Gigantes del Cibao on Monday.
Gigantes slide continues as they have lost six of their last seven games
While the top of the table is shaping up to likely come down to the final few games, the bottom of the table continues to struggle. The Gigantes have lost six of their last seven games and sit at 13-21, tied with the Toros for the worst record. The Toros have lost five of their last six games.
Gigantes debut Washington Nationals infielder Luis García Jr.
While the Gigantes are struggling, their fans watched a player take the field for the first time this season on Monday. Nationals infielder Lusi García Jr. made his return to LIDOM. He played 12 games with the Gigantes last season. He played in 140 big league games last season and had a .282 batting average with 18 home runs.
