Double the Luises, double the debuts, double the header. Tuesday’s Brewers-Cardinals twin bill at Busch Stadium calls for a stick of Doublemint — because two prospects named Luis are in line to make their Major League debuts on the same day, in the same doubleheader, on opposite sides. Milwaukee’s Luis Lara, the Venezuelan speedster, and St. Louis’s Luis Gastelum, a Team Mexico World Baseball Classic arm, headline a slate loaded with intrigue — most of it from the players who aren’t even in the starting lineups. Here’s everything you need to watch.

The Headliner: Luis Lara Set for His MLB Debut
The Brewers are calling up top prospect Luis Lara, and the 21-year-old switch-hitting center fielder from San Felipe, Venezuela — the same hometown as three-time batting champion Luis Arraez — is in line to make his Major League debut. A top-50 talent in all of baseball (No. 47 per Baseball America), Lara has torched Triple-A Nashville this season, slashing .321/.432/.470 with nine home runs and 24 stolen bases while drawing more walks than strikeouts. Milwaukee believed in him so completely it signed him to a seven-year, $31 million extension in June — before he’d played a single big-league inning. His path opened when infielder David Hamilton exited Monday’s game with a hamstring issue. He credits Brewers All-Star catcher and fellow Venezuelan William Contreras as a mentor.
The Other Debut: Team Mexico’s Luis Gastelum
Lara isn’t the only debut to watch. Cardinals right-hander Luis Gastelum, a 24-year-old reliever from Los Mochis, Mexico, is in line for his first big-league appearance out of the St. Louis bullpen. Gastelum represented Team Mexico at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and has been dominant at Triple-A Memphis this season — a 2.27 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a .172 opponents’ average across 36 relief outings. A veteran of the Mexican Pacific League with Cáneros de Los Mochis, he’s the international story tucked inside a division-rival doubleheader. A Mexico-versus-Venezuela debut doubleheader is about as “Baseball Without Borders” as a Tuesday in St. Louis gets.

Game 1 Pitching: A First-Ever Start vs. “Miserable-to-Hit” Misiorowski
The Game 1 mound matchup is a study in contrasts. Cardinals right-hander Matt Svanson (born Jan. 31, 1999, in Lake Zurich, Illinois) draws the assignment — and it’s a milestone: a career reliever with 73 big-league appearances and zero starts, Svanson is making the first start of his MLB career, likely as an opener in a bullpen game.

He couldn’t have drawn a tougher spot. Opposing him is Jacob Misiorowski (9-4, 1.47 ERA) — the 6-foot-7 flamethrower and current National League Cy Young favorite, who leads the Majors in ERA, strikeouts (156) and WHIP (0.78) and touches 100-plus mph. Svanson will need to be perfect; Miz usually is.

Game 2 Pitching: A Full-Circle Debut Story
Game 2 sends Milwaukee lefty Robert Gasser against Cardinals right-hander Hunter Dobbins (born Aug. 30, 1999, in Bryan, Texas). There’s a nice bit of symmetry to Dobbins on the mound: he made his own MLB debut in a doubleheader against these very Cardinals back in 2025 — as a member of the Red Sox — winning it at Fenway before being traded to St. Louis in the Willson Contreras deal.

A Subplot: Two Snubbed Second Basemen

Milwaukee’s Brice Turang entered the week third among second basemen with 53 RBIs and a nine-game hitting streak. St. Louis leadoff man JJ Wetherholt has 13 home runs, fourth at the position — and he’s a rookie. On the comedown from All-Star weekend, both make their case at Busch.

The Bigger Picture
Milwaukee comes in red-hot, having won five straight against St. Louis this season and 11 of its last 15 overall as the National League Central’s front-runner. The Cardinals, meanwhile, will look to end that slide against the Brewers — and to stop a troubling recent trend of late-inning collapses that has cost them games they led.
