World Baseball Network is taking a way too early look at what some squads could look like for the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Today, we take a look at what a potential lineup could look like for Canada.
It is likely that most of Canada’s roster from the 2023 World Baseball Classic could return for the 2026 edition after finishing in third in Pool C with a 2-2 record. They will be led by Freddie Freeman, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Canada. Some other players who could be featured on Canada’s roster could be Damiano Palmegiani, Jared Young, Dasan Brown, and prospects Tyler Black, Myles Naylor, Dylan O’Rae, Liam Hicks, David McCabe, Sam Shaw, and Trei Cruz.
As for their starting rotation, Nick Pivetta looks to continue his dominance on the hill. Currently, Pivetta is a free agent awaiting his next opportunity. Cal Quantrill was also part of Canada’s rotation in 2023, along with prospect Mitch Bratt, who looks to be a leader for their staff. Other starting pitchers who could join Canada in 2026 include Mike Soroka, Jordan Balazovic, Adam Macko, and Jonah Tong.
Canada’s bullpen in 2023 was older, led by 11-year MLB veteran John Axford. Matt Brash, Cade Smith, Curtis Taylor, and Rob Zastryzny, who were part of the bullpen during the ’23 Classic, could return. All these pitchers could look for opportunities to lock down saves, with Cade Smith likely landing the role as the team’s closer after a breakout rookie season with the Cleveland Guardians. Other candidates for the bullpen include Zach Pop, Jordan Romano, and Erik Sabrowski.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic will begin on March 5 and run until March 17. Canada will be part of Pool A, where they will face Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Panama. Pool A will be played at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
